Hi Anup,

Sorry to know about your loss and YES, it must be repaired ASAP.

I think you will have to bear 50% of the cost of a plastic part. Secondly, there is a fixed charge of 1000 rupees, levied every time you stake a claim. So in your case it is not advisable to go for claiming insurance.

I just cannot understand the logic over here - Why take Insurance if you don't want to use it?

I hope that statement by me is quite strong and I apologies for the strength of the statement but guys, please help me understand one thing, why take it if not intending to use it?

I have seen a lot of threads with queries on should I claim it? But, if you are never going to claim, then why not just take a general insurance of 500 odd rupees and be happy?

Is the usage of the insurance meant only for major accidents? Sincerely no, because in most major accidents, if the vehicle is getting written off completely, then, it is most likely that the some / all occupants of the vehicle have grievious injuries / there is loss of life - then, of what value is this insurance when compared to the loss of life?

Trust me, the no claim bonus is in reality a trap by the insurance companies to which people fall trap to. It is rather better to get the maximum out of the insurance policy by claiming everything.

Valid Point there. One should not be reluctant to stake a claim if your vehicle meets with an accident. It is not a fault to stake a claim, that is more than the premium you have paid.

The only decision to be made is, "is it really worth it?"

Most important parameter is, how much will you shell out of your pocket? both when you lay claim and when you do not? one should keep in mind the charges you will pay for taking the claim (fixed charge per claim, depreciation charges, labor charges and last, but not the least, loss of NCB if any). If all these costs are same or very close to how much you will spend without the insurance, then do not stake a claim. If they are significantly lower then the total cost of reairs do not hesitate to claim.

This fixed charge, as I understand, is known as Excess amount (or claim charges).  It is deducted from the amount of insurance settled/payable.  In this case (Alto), the charge would be Rs.500/-.  It's Rs.1000/- for cars above 1500 CC.

Yes, if you have followed the conditions as per law needed while driving with learners licence.

Any way, if FIR is not needed, it is better to manage with a valid DL of another person to avoid unnecessary questions.

You can live in your car, but you can't drive your house.

I was driving with a person having a valid DL. And "L" sticker was also there. Is it enough? or anything else required?

Time of the accident should be between 10AM and 5PM as that is the period in which the Learners licence can be used.

On the side lines, the law does not allow a new car driver to be trained for driving at night!! Something serious needs to be done here.
