In Asia, after the World War II, Japan was in ruins. Roads were badly destroyed and the government was in need of special vehicles. The Japanese government in the late 1940's offered a contract for a Jeep type vehicle for the military, police and fire workers. Engineers at DAT Company in Tokyo worked to fill the need of the government.
The first design came about in 1949-1950 and was the 4W60 model. By mid 1950 the designed and tested model was named Patrol. Nissan saw the need in civilian use in Japan for a vehicle of this type and also around the world. The decision was made to produce the Patrol for civilian use. These early Patrols were mainly used by police, fire and military in Japan. In 1951 the first Patrols were exported outside Japan.
Shortly after, in 1960s, Indian Army showed an interest in 2 vehicles from the Nissan stable, they were the Nissan Patrol P60 & the Nissan 4W73.The first production units were completed at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ) around 1969. VFJ was sanctioned in 1965 for the production of three non-fighting vehicles for the Indian military: the 3 ton Shaktiman truck from MAN (Germany), the 4W73 (1 ton Carrier) and quarter ton Nissan Patrol.
Interestingly, both the vehicles from Nissan stable were fitted with the same engines and lots of parts in common.
The Nissan P60 was affectionately christened as Jabalpur Ordnance aNd Guncarriage Assembly hence JONGA
