Also, as Feroz has pointed, if more than one opts for the same number, then bidding is followed wherin the bidders need to submit their amount as DD and the highest bidder gets the number while the one who loses will not be refunded with the amount. Frown

In Hyderabad/AP, you need to fill a form and deposit min 5000/- for any fancy numbers. Further, there are different min bidding prices for different set of fancy numbers like 111,222,100, 1111, 9999, 0001, 0009, etc

I remember the max amount is for 0001, 0009 and 0786 and min bid amount is 50000/-

Earlier the agents & the RTO staff had a good income from allotment of such numbers.  Now these bids generate good income to RTOs.

You can ask the RTO directly as well as the dealer. Dealers do have their own RTO agents and they can guide you for sure.

Better to approach directly. I think MVDs of most of the states are computerized and nothing out of turn can be done by agents.

Actually Government is earning a lot, thanks to the craziness of some car owners. Last week number 1 in a new series in an RTO in Kerala was bid by a person for 6 lakhsSurprised.

I can give you some idea, here in Lucknow... if you want to go for 1111,2222 .. this kinda no. 7777 or 9999 watever, you have to pay 10k. 0786 is also 10k. Other one 1234 or similar ... 10k.

0011,0022.. its 5k. I picked one 0077 and paid 5k. ... 1213 n just like this no. 1718... well, I paid 2k for 1718. I had a list, with all the special no.'s and price but somehow mis-placed. Not a big issue for me.... If you wanna know... I can collect the same from any dealership.

Although the threat was Old I want to clarify 1 thing. I am from kerla and when I visited kerla Motor Vehicle department web site they have already classified some numbers as fance numbers, like 1, 111, 222 etc. However If I want a particular number other than this fance number (ie a number that is not in their fance number list) what's the formalites that I need to follow? Would be able to book the number in advance in that case should I have to pay the fee amout of 2000 (as in the case of fancy number fee)? Also say now the current number alloted is 4x series and I had delivered the vehicle now, Is it possible to book a number which starts at 8x series say 8100 etc. Any one from Kerla please gimme a clarification on this as this is a bit urgent.

From March 2011 onwards the new rules for registration number allotment is in force in Kerala.

Any number other than that listed in fancy number list can be applied for by paying Rs. 3000. If no one else demands that number, it will be given to the sole applicant and otherwise will be put for auction.

The application can be made only after temporary registration of the vehicle by the owner.

The numbers one can book in advance depends on the particular RT office, fixed considering the volume of registration for one week. Earlier it was 250 numbers starting from the last number registered. Any how number difference amounting to 1000's may not be possible in any case.

The complete rules are available here.
