I have some doubts regarding the use of A/c in my car.
  • Which is better method to reduce cooling ; increasing temperature  or reducing blower speed?
  • Does lowering the blower speed affect mileage?
  • If yes how much difference will be there in mileage if we use A/c at full blower speed and low temperature compared to opposite?  By temperature increase I did not mean to go to the heater end. My car is Swift Dzire LDi.
  • If I use recirculation instead of fresh air is there any difference in mileage?

You can live in your car, but you can't drive your house.

Increasing temperature
  • Does lowering the blower speed affect mileage?
Technically yes-practically no!
  • If yes how much difference will be there in mileage if we use A/c at full blower speed and low temperature compared to opposite?
Negligible if at all any!
  • If I use recirculation instead of fresh air is there any difference in mileage?
faster cooling and better mileage in recirculation mode-this but depends on the ambient temp.

Thanks Binoy, some more:

Is there significant improvement in mileage if we increase temperature?

How long can we use recirculation mode in a single stretch? I mean the intervals between the fresh air mode.

I think every 1 hr of continuous AC working, one should use Fresh Air mode.Besides,in that Continuous AC mode u can use recirculation as per your requirements.

increasing temperature will not increase the mileage.

Air modes are very subjective and depends on a lot of factors-like the ambient temperature, the number of people in the car etc-so there are no set time periods-the usual dictum is 'when you feel stuffy' use fresh air mode.

As far as I understand... use of AC in any mode & at any blower speed do not affect mileage either way, as these do not put any additional burden on the engine.

Thanks, I always thought A/c affects mileage to a great extend as when I was with my esteem it has a considerable power loss when A/c is used and that too at lower temperature.

Next,
How often we should fill the compressor gas. And how can we make sure that it is the same that is specified in the owner's manual that is filled in our car?

AC definitely affects the mileage.  The mode & the blower speed doesn't affect any further.

Regarding compressor gas, it is required to be refilled only when the need arises - it otherwise has no fixed periodicity.  I, however, do not have the technical know-how to elaborate on that.

i really dnt hv idea about the longetivity of compressor gas.But my relative had a Wagon R.It just 8 yrs old.Last yr he had to fill in the AC gas.To after 7 yrs he had to get it refilled Yes,AC affects the mileage to a greater extent.I was told that if an idle standing car is running on AC then its is equivalent to car burning fuel at speed of 50km/hr.

Each car uses a particular grade of 'gas'(naturally now all CFC free) the same is printed and put up as a sticker on the AC lines near the filling points in the engine bay-do have a look.

Technically it is difficult to check for the levels of the gas independently-a AC technician is a better option for the same.
