Well there has been a very good development in the keys for automobiles.
A new genere of keys have been brought to india by adopting new technologies for security in cars.
From normal keys - remote keys-transponder/immobilizer keys- ultralite keys and many more.

The iCATs works on the principle of multiplexed digital communication. The transponder inbuilt into the car key carries a unique electronic identification code. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) of the vehicle also carries a corresponding secret code. The moment the key is inserted and the ignition is switched “on” the code is communicated from the key to vehicle’s ECU.

The engine starts only if the secret code on the key transponder matches with the corresponding code on the ECU. In case of a mismatch of the codes, the electronic circuitry prevents the engine from starting. Under no circumstance the engine will start with any locally fabricated key.

Maruti recommends that incase of a loss of the key, the customer should visit the dealer workshop to electronically, de-link the lost key.

Ultralite keys are the lightest in weight. They come in different colours. You can get this car keys duplicated in Mumbai at Ashar Key Hub. Can be used for cars like Alto, Zen, Qualis,Camry,Optra,Matiz,Tavera,Accent ect.
Cars having immobilizer can use these type of kyes only to open the doors as it cannot start the engine.

Yes, the working of these keys is simple. Each key has a specific resistance which is detected by the ECU when its turned. This is done to reduce thefts.

PS: As no-one had replied to  this topic, I thought I can reply to this old topic.

I tried this and I had understeer, I tried that and I had oversteer, at the end of the corner I just ran out of talent!

I believe every engine will have a different resistance. I guess its stored in the ECM for that the ECM's secret data has to be checked whihc isn't accessible by a common mechanic. And I believe that if you lose your keys, you have to registered a complain and stuff and later you will get your car. keys after checking the key's resistance. Its almost impossible to steal a car with immobilser system.

First off a car with an immobilizer can be stolen.

Earlier immobilizers used RFID tag tech to detect the code on the key-but thieves were able to decipher the same and cars now-a-days sports 'direct binary code generation' tech-which is almost fool proof.

The immobilizer prevent the engine from starting-so the car can still be towed away(ie engine off-car in neutral).

This is were gear lock comes in as the car cannot be towed away also!

But a really enterprising thief can wedge the clutch and still tow away the car!!

But GPS based immobilzers are the way forward.

Also the 'key number' is not the 'code' for the immobilizer.

The counter code for generation of the immobilizer code is present on each car itself-but 'where' it is present wont be divulged on a public forum like this! LOL.

Isn't it obvious?Laughing

ECM also has it isn't program. The new one with resisitance is difficult to be stolen as the resistance has to be of the exact same resistance, when a minute difference and the ECm will reject it.
