all companies have different variant names .
Tata for example have interchanging variants -
                LS -low end
                LX-mid version
SX - high end( discontinued indigo )
                XL - xclusive lounge (new)

Maruti and Ford have the same ( almost ) variants-

LXi / LDi - base model petrol / diesel ( maruti )
EXi - base model petrol / diesel ( ford )
ZXi - mid version petrol /diesel ( ford )
VXi / VDi - mid version petrol / diesel (maruti )
SXi - high end petrol / diesel ( ford )
ZXi / ZDi - High end petrol / diesel (maruti )

Hyundai have variants like-

GVS - GLS - GLE -GLX - (getz prime)
XXi - Xi -SX ( verna )etc.

Chevrolet have variants like -

1.2 -base
1.2 LS- mid version
1.2 LT - elite
1.2 LT OP-optional with ABS and other accesories (aveo UV-A)

Many brands dont have any full form of these variants ( except indigo XL )
these are just means of differentating the different versions .

P.S. I dont know if  'i' stands for power steering . Almost all cars come with PS nowadays.

There are no expansions as far as i know-just internal terminology.

I dont think    i   is for power steering-have a look at this

comparison of the Alto LX and LXi-both dont have a power steering

i = injection means fuel injection...lx = carb type
