@Pankaj, I agree with you that we have to be cautious on such highways. I would call NH-8 a typical Indian highway, with poor safety standards. I have seen many like this one in my time. We had to drive to Surat and back in the same day and so I was doing good speeds. Morning trip from Sion to Surat (Parle Point) was done in about 5 hours doing speeds of 100-120 kmph. Had to do a lot of lane cutting in the heavy and undisciplined lorry traffic. Evening trip from Surat (Parle Point) to Borivili, doing speeds of 90-100 kmph, took about 5 hours in very heavy trarffic, poorly lit roads with pedestrians frequently crossing, and massive potholes as we approached Borivili. The dumper guy was apparently trying to avoid one of these.

Well, all said and done, it all boils down to common sense. No matter what safety features the car has, it does not take away the driver's duty to drive sensibly and responsibly.

However, increasing safety features may also be counter-productive. For example electronic systems that sense impending crash and automatically apply brakes (i.e., they control the car instead of the driver directly doing it) will lead to bad driving practices simply because the driver now thinks that the car will take care of such situations instead of him/herself. Same applies to proximity sensors (in some cases of course). I mean anything that causes the driver to stop (or reduce) using his/her own senses will lead to a bad driver.

Also, we need laws against people who place the responsibility of their lives on the hands of drivers. These guys need to be penalised for crossing at the wrong places for example.

Another point, Overtaking from the left!

Another unique incident, I was driving my Spark on Jail Road, one Grand Vitara overtakes me from the left and as construction is going on in full swing (still construction is going on) there was a brick on road (I saw it later after that incident) and somehow Vitara's tyre pressed a corner of that brick and brick thrashed into my left front door, impact was hard coz I was on 60 atleast. somehow I managed to settle down and stopped the car and saw, a big dent. Still I am driving my car with that dent.
