As long as driving off road in the tough terrain where I am talking about places like: Tabo, Spiti, Kaaza, Rohtang, Keylong and so on to Leh I think Gypsy would be the best bet as you really need a monster to ride these roads with good ground height.

But on the other hand if my wife wants to accompany me I  would like to have bit comofort in my 4x4 SUV which shifts me to Safari but budget increses over 10lakhs and not sure if Safari break down on these tough tarrains what would be my options ?

But overall I think I have shortlisted these 2 SUVs Gypsy and Safari.

Yeh man  i know that , Moontero was laubnched around 10 months back - 1 yr back ! but i am sure the Outlander is even Better!

comming back to the point these SUV are not affordable by a medium class , hence i said Disel Safari , one can do off roadings as well as Fuel economy decent 8- 10(city )  13 in highways for Diesel!

anyways there has been no such details about the furthur requriements our person wants , if he wud have told it , it wud have been even better to sort the things out! ( what say)

safari would be the ideal choice as per ur requirements as it is more solid & rigid than the gypsy, has better ride & have good interiors & comfort which gypsy will not give u.

u can even consider the scorpio, i have heard that on customers demand & order they make a 4x4 for the customer, so u can check it out with ur mahindra dealer else safari is the car to go for & that too a 2.2ltr engine.

I beg to differ the above statement; The Safari cannot even match the rigidity of the Gypsy. Take a safari off road for 10 kms and it would start falling apart. It sure has better ride quality, good interiors and comfort which Gypsy cannot match. Safaris and Scorpios are better on the tarmac.

On terrains like Tabo, Rohtang, Spiti, Kaaza a Gypsy would be your best bet.

Advantages of the Gypsy over the Safari when both the vehicles are taken to the  terrains mentioned above

  1. The high thermal conductivity would ensure that the Engine heats up quickly even under extremely cold conditions. Thus, there are no starting problems even in the midst of snow.

  1. High Ground Clearance of 210 mm would be apt for you to tackle any terrain.

@ love Kumar :-

The gypsy doesnot have AC, power steering nor any other such comfort! and is cheapest with petrol engine , but safari onthe other hand has all the features and best comfort and moreoevr the diesel engine will save you the fuel bills!

  1. 1.3 L MPFi Petrol engine would be more refined than a diesel. It would be way lighter than the diesel engine ensuring better power to weight ratio, more power and greater responsiveness.

Take this advice as a word from a fellow who is a serious off-roader himself.

Yeh man , you ae obv a serious off roader , i ahve to respect , but the 2.2 L VTT IDCOR engine of safari isnt bad , and moreover MR Kumar wants a comfort! btw if Mr ,kumars usage is above 700 kms a month then i think he shud go for the Safari Diesel! at the same point of time he cud also try the Scorpio Gateway 4X4 ( if avauilable) or else if his usage is low , gypsy shud do the trick!

I agree,

Choose a Gypsy only if you intend to do serious off roading. Its no match for creature comforts offered by the Scorpio or the Safari. Its really difficult to combine on road comfort and off road competence in the same vehicle in indian conditions for middle class creatures like us. If you unintentionally breakup something on your vehicle while offroading, the cost of repairing it would be a bomb if its a Safari or a Scorpio.

Its better to keep 2 different vehicles for 2 different purposes. But considering your situation, if your On Road usage is more its better to pick up a 4x4 Safari or a 4x4 Scorpio. Do think about the Bolero also. Its a good contender for off road activities. The creature comforts are not as good as the scorpio or the safari but are still miles ahead of Gypsy or a JEEP. Moreover now that the CRDe Bolero has been launched, you can check whether Mahindra is offering a 4x4 with the Common Rail engine.

Oh i almost forgot. What abt the Tata TL 4x4 . it is a powerpacked Sports Utility truck (SUT). It has a 1948CC turbocharged intercooled Diesel engine which churns out 90bhp and 195Nm torque. It has Power steering , AC , Synchromesh gear with elecric shifting and tubeless tyres . It has 73% gradebility among other light trucks - first in India. It also has the highest power to wieght ratio.for some reason i couldnt find the price any where on the web . Plz post if u know the price. For more info visit the following site. http://gotruck.tatamotors.com/

Is the TL 4x4 still available ? I was under the impression that Tata has stopped due to poor sales.

Anyways, coming back to the topic, TL 4x4 is a pimped up 207 truck which is serving the commercial markets quite well. The refinement would more or less be the same with somewhat marginal improvements provided by Aircon, Power Steering. The rear seat space is quite less. For all the bells and whistles being offered, tata is charging close to 7.5 lacs which I don't think is worthwhile.

It would be great if tata can offer the 2.2 L Dicor engine on this truck at the same price range.
