One of the cheapest 4x4 SUVs is for sure the Maruti Gypsy. Built on Ladder frame chassis, it’s a mountain goat on an unforgiving terrain; it can take up serious beating and is built as strong as a tank. No wonder its one of the hot favorites of the Indian Army.

P.S - The wannabe offroaders like Safari, Scorpio can never match the abilities of this wonderful SUV, they look, feel & drive better on the tarmac. I can vouch for its off road dexterity & the reliability of Maruti.

However, this vehicle is far away from comfort, expect a real bumpy ride, the stiff leaf springs will ensure that every pebble on the road is felt. Features like Air conditioner, Power Steering, Power Windows, Central Locking are far away from this bad boy. It only believes in one Power… that’s the muscle power. You would have a good 17 inch biceps after driving it regularly for few months.

You can also consider the Bolero Invader 4x4. Its currently being manufactured with both XD3P & DI engines. 4x4 as an option is available on both the models.

Think wisely and take your decision.

May the FOURs be with you - JEEP

i was not joking!

The thread is on the cheapest 4 x 4 on sale in India(there is no mention of diesel only --is there a mention?)-and the Gypsy is the answer and not the safari!

I wasn't aware of this.  But I still doubt - is it an SUV 4x4?

Sports-was the standard car for the rallies-before the esteems and lancers took over

Utility-used by the army-so has to be!!

Yes, you have a point. But it isn't categorised as an SUV. Anyway!

By the way, isn't ST version the same as HT (except the weight, features & specifications are same).  In that case (if so), ST version (Rs.5.39 lac) should be considered the cheapest.

ST surely is cheaper-but an open top gypsy is not a good idea of a 'car' let alone SUV.

The hardtop(HT) qualifies as a civilian car in my books and not the softtop(ST)

Agree, but ST version would 'technically qualify' as the cheapest

Jokes apart... So, Gypsy (petrol) is the cheapest 4x4 - virtually an SUV.
