Hi,

Im planning to book a Swift diesel in another week. The dealer says it could take upto 8 months if i go for an ABS. So he suggests if i book a Diesel without ABS i could get it within 3 months. I thought ABS can be retofitted later, but the dealer says thats not possible. So can ABS be retrofitted later or not? And what will be price if i can retrofit it later? Are there any disadvantages if i retrofit it?

i would not advice you to go in for the ABS after buying the car. there are ADD-ON ABS kits available in the market but they would cost you more than what the company gives you in and you would also loose the warranty on the car if you make any fittings not on the stock vehicle. moreover if the abs is not fit correctly then it could give problems and can also be fatal. try to visit other maruti dealers also. maybe you could shorten the waiting time by a few weeks or a month. if not then you might as well go in for the non ABS version.

I've checked with all the dealers. I think as of now going for a non ABS would be better. And im not patient enough to wait 8 months just for a hatch.

Binoy, just try surfing the net and you will find many dealers who do the retrofitting for ABS. the ADD-ON that i have mentioned are imported kits. not sure if they are widely available in INDIA or do they have any manufacturers. a friend of mine was to go in for Dzire without ABS and get it fitted later on. he had even spoken to a local mechanic(who deals in imported bikes and cars) here. but eventually he stretched his budget and went in for the city

have a look at this thread which also mentions that ABS retrofitting can be done but involves huge cost and requires precession fitting. the kits are still the ones that are imported and available in the market.

I also heard that these kits are available but the problem is very few mechannics (technically perfect) available in the market (I also heard that in delhi you can get experts easily). But it is not advisable to buy this kit and take risk coz if its not fitted perfectly than it could give serious problems.

yes Rajiv. thats absolutely true. generally only mechanics who deal/service/repair imported models know actually how the kit needs to be taken care of as even the hub needs to be changed/placed with sensors for the ABS. there is absolutely no point in going in for a refittment. its not worth at all.

As we all understand, all in all, it's not advisable to go for retrofitment of ABS.

One should either wait for the ABS version OR settle for non-ABS version.  Alternatively, one can also consider some other car with ABS that is easily available.
