Yeah, thats what proves my point... They misjudged the response,  and marked up the price severely to encash their market leader advantage... Were forced to eat a humble pie by Indian public that knows only PRICE advantage!!!

Mfrs. generally price their merchandise as 'fairly' as they can, based on capacity to pay, etc. The general rule of thumb is, poorer the country, cheaper the price. This results in purchase power parity (PPP) being different from the absolute value of the money paid for the product. This is the reason why a McBurger is 2 Euro in Europe (120 Rs?), but just Rs.20 in India.

In case of cars, this principle is made to stand on its head - the US customer is spoilt for choice, whereas Indians are starved for choice. Features that are commonplace for decades are not there in India...(I'm wrecking my head over the OBD connector, which is std for 12 years in US!)  Prices of cars like Toyota Prius (considered a common subcompact in US - Think Aveo or City)  are marked up astronomically.. All these anti-customer policies get my goat...

Was that burger thing a joke. The burgers you are comparing are wrong. Please compare apples with apples and not oranges. You may compare McChicken. Maharaja Mac cant also be compared as it is not sold there. (please dont bring Big Mac into picture now).

I dont think the 200 hybrid cars even qualify to be taken as an example.

If it does then we can take all the cars above C-Class for comparison. Honestly, I dont think they can be taken as an example to prove the point.

Honda market leaders in India. HA HA HA

I feel the hybrid launch must have been done on a test basis. The chances of this being high is because the numbers were qute less.

Poorer the country cheaper the price. What is wrong in it. An average company wont think of selling/pricing a product in such a way that the majority wont buy.

Indian prices are high because of the high taxes here. I wont say anything is wrong in it. If you want a car, then pay the tax for it.

When you have brought the issue of price, how much are the parking charges here in comparision to US?, toll rates? Why not compare these figures.

Do we have the income of US? No. So till then all the big cars and features should wait.

OBD connector or scanner is not much in need for the aam junta.(Please dont take this in a wrong way). Aam Junta needs only these things - FE, FE, FE, low maintenance, lower cost, basic features. So the current cars in India Qualifies under these things. Which I dont think any of these high end foriegn cars can satisfy.

Anti-customer policies - what and where.

Note: Please take this in a ligher sense.

Guys,

This discussion is getting interesting. Pour in all your views.

I was 'pained' when i saw the latest Honda Accord being sold in the UAE for about 8 lacs! Also as Krishna has pointed out the non availability of the vast array of car models here in India.

The reasons for the same are simple.

-India has a domestic car industry and so the government has to protect the same so the taxes are high for cars that are not made in India(even the parts imported).

-India does not have oil reserves so has to be cautious in allowing companies to sell cars with big throbbing V8 engines as the same will require more fuel to be imported and hence loss to money to the govt due to the subsidy.

The second point is what gives a bit of respite to us all-all the people with all the car models(read Europe/US etc) are getting 'ripped off' paying sky high fuel prices as their countries does not subsidize petrol prices. In that way we are living in heaven!

About the 'burger thing'-thats a non issue as Euro 2/- is the same for the European as Rs 20/- is for the Indian(the conversion makes the comparison skewed)-so there is nothing there.

Guys, I'm frankly disappointed. I expected at least a moment of thought to go with each point. Is that very difficult?

I compared veggie burgers, my first hand experience.  As far as 'McChicken' is concerned, it is an India specific burger. All over the world the most common, and cheapest is one with a beef patty in it. Most are at the same price. (Just a question, ami, how do you know the McMenu so well? Laughing BTW so do I, see above).

Looks like I didn't need the burgers, Binoy pointed out the disparity in pricing quite well with his Accord example....

Take any example, you will find this disparity. Of course the Civic one was the most glaring, so easily recalled.

Honda market leaders in India. HA HA HA

Leader = who leads. Did anybody else introduce a Hybrid in India earlier? So isn't Honda a Leader in the segment? Think. Answer. Laugh later, totally optional.

Poor pay more or less? First decide.

Yeah.. small kids don't need big toys.. typical response of Haves to Have-nots.

Hey, if a guy is buying a merc, an audi, a (put whatever high end car you think of here) , he is not buying it for FE FE FE... he is buying it for FEatures FEatures FEatures... So you think it is OK to rip off such guys? Just because they can pay, charge twice the price? This is pro-customer?

I know I am sounding like Sarah Palin talking about pro-america and anti-america, but what I talk about is reality.

WRONG - Prices in US have gone down, they are now about $2 or sub-$2/ US gallon. Their oil is not administered price (=big ripoff, in general). What subsidy? Govt is always a net earner of revenue in this game. Prices creep up slower than elsewhere. What the janta does not notice is they are very very slow to climb down.

Binoy, you speak in contradictory voices when you talk about the burger  and the UAE example in the same breath ( / post ).

Krishna-the price have gone down now and they have been paying sky high price for the all the time that the oil was in the 100$ range.

You seems to see everything in a single perspective-hence the feeling of contradiction in my posts that you seems to sense. The pricing is depended on taxes and the manufacturers are not responsible for the same-here in India its more and elsewhere its not so.

Also the assumption that the oil prices 'creep up' is wrong-maybe subjective as i find the increase in price to 140$ levels over the past months monumentally fast than creeping.

As i suppose our views on the subject is well laid out i would give Ameen a chance to respond and then stop the OT discussion on this thread-we can do it in the 'General discussions' thread.

Krishna/Ameen hope the concern is appreciated-thanks.

Just one quick clarification - the slow creep and much much slower climbdown was being mentioned for the Indian administered prices regime for refined petroleum products, and not the free market prices of crude. For the US market, the climb up and down happens in sync with free market prices, inthe absence of the administered prices regime. The Indian scene is closer to Govt. robbing peter to pay paul, pocketing a healthy change in the bargain.

I agree, we need to stop this OT discussion. But did you notice, my post count has gone up to 70! (Just joking, I don't intend to spam!)

AFAIK Govt & PSU's are making loss due to this subsidy.

McDonald's - I am a big time foodie.

Market Leader - Nice one.

In India Poor pay less and rich pays more. If I am not wrong the cars does have tax slabs.

All the luxury cars come in a different tax bracket. In hyderabad, if you wish to own a second car you have to pay 3 percentage extra in tax.

The petrol dont come as fast as the crude prices fell. Please check the dollar rate when crude touched 150 and check the dollar rate now. Still the fuel prices have come down once and they are mulling another one.

Rest have been covered by Binoy.

Sad that this discussion is coming to an end.

Cheers guys!!! It was lovely.

Saw this in the news. So thought of reviving old threads and good cheer... Wink

BTW 1200cc engine means we have an anaemic 'cousin sister' of currently available hatches in the offing...

And yes... Masahiro Takedagawa, HSCI president and CEO himself called it a 'hatchback', so we better hold our horses in that department.. Smile
