That's right. The Navi-Gear is a wonderful innovation of technology to intensify the on- and off- road driving understandings and dynamics.

The Navi gear is just a GPS unit-there is nothing great about it-most cars currently run integrated GPS systems.

Good to have this feature if someone is buying Endeavour, and also good to have in-car chiller/warmer. Endeavour is having great road presence...dashing looks. One of the best for Drivers!

People dont change when you tell them that there is a Better option... They change when they realise that there is No Other Option..

Ford says this can be retrofitted to any Endeavour for the price they're quoting.

They are only offering a stand alone GPS receiver- this unit can be fit on any car- i not privy with the exact model but from the looks of it - its a Gramin GPS.

In this era of GPS(that too A-GPS) enabled mobile phones - such a feature will appeal to the uninitiated!

I disagree, Binoy. I wouldn't want my directions to be interrupted by a phone call, and neither would I have to take a lot of care so that my GPS unit gets wet during the rains. Multipurpose things never do any of the things they do as well as a specialised unit would, and I find them unnecessarily complicating. If Banwari's phone got spoilt, he'd lose music, photos, email on the move... My mother, on the other hand, will lose the ability to make and receive calls if her phone quits, nothing more.

On a lighter note, I recommend the sat nag.

Good point Charles about multifunction devices- but the point i was  making was that the provision of a GPS unit(which is not even intergrated) in the endeavor should not be seen as the introduction of a new variant or a big advance - my only intention  was to highlight the availability of  GPS in even a normal mobile phone.

The practicality of using  GPS on a phone is entirely individual but i fail to fathom how the phone would get wet inside a car.

Almost all GPS devices(including mobile phones) have visual and audio direction systems so getting lost while talking on the phone(which happens to be illegal in India!) seems to be far fetched.

I am sure you would have experienced the integrated handsfree experience while testing all the high end cars were the phone becomes integrated into the multimedia interface of the car-the navigation directions does get through to the driver by the audio speakers(also displayed on the monitor).

Personally i have limited experience with such systems(only two cars-the Nissan Altima and the Nissan Armada)-but the interface seemed to work very well.

'Convergence' seems to be the key word for the  future and with the introduction of 3G in India- even real time Geo-tagging will become a reality here. The possibilities are endless.

P.s - apologies for taking this thread grossly off topic.

But it's interestingly off-topic! Lol.

You won't keep your GPS phone in the car no? It'll be in your pocket, which isn't waterproof.

I haven't had any experience with a sat-nav so far, but I find the 'bhaisahab' navigation system simple and effective. (As in "bhaisahab, yeh jagah kahan hai?")

LOL - the 'bhaisahab' - method tends to work a treat in India-with detailed route maps and the interesting sights along the way!

I have never faced a water leak problem with phones in pocket - but what you are aiming at is a very valid consideration.

One can have the best in tech - but a small issue like rain or even a run down battery will make the 30K gizmo no more worth than a brick!
