Is souvik_mss is available for a report on this tour or 2008 or any similar one later towards Himalyas by anybody else?

I plan a travel from Kerala to 'Some where near to Himalayas/ Ladak/Rohtang/ Kargil- reachable by a Linea' trip.

Any recent experiences are valuable for me.

(Thanks to HV Kumar, got the route to Ladak from him, expect more recent, real-time travel experiences before setting out by May)

Hello to all,

Back after long time. Git stuck in professional life and could not do any memmorable trip after West Sikkim. Road conditions in northen part of India has changed a lot. So peaceful journey but less adventure.

recently I got some update regarding the Kalpa, shangla, Tabo route.

It's before rainy season. Road conditions are much better, but as per last update Rohtang was yet to be opened to be crossed during April. May be now it's open.

On a contrary note I am planning to own a Tata Safari 4X4 version. For my next trip to leh, ladkhak and north sikkim etc....

Anybody has any idea about the reliability of the Tata Safari 4X4 version? How is the driving experience of this one? How sturdy is it?

Should I post this in a different thread?

If so please let me know.

Just forgot to mention that had a trip to North West Nepal during last October (October 2010). But that was not with my Car. people asked me not to take car to those places. Yes indeed there are several places where practically road doesn't exists. Mostly the driving track in the river bed. There got a chance to experience a 4X4 bolero. Good off roading but there is no comfort at all. If time and situation permits will love to go those places with a good off roader.

Kiran,

But the problem is I didnt get any real-time info on the roads condition.

Unless I get a dependable confirmation that roads are really good so a Linea can survive and come back.

That is the problem faced by me.

you should get roads in better shape now than in September / October. That is what I have experienced. I doubt whether you can gather updated information. But what you can do is that you plan the trip and then judge based on the actually what you face.

I recently went from Manali up towards Rohtang pass via  a rented Qualis with my family. Had to stop about 8 kms short of Rohtang pass because military personnel had closed the route to Rohtang (too dangerous in rainy weather with possibility of landslides; lot of snow was still present from previous night and was melting, causing slippery road conditions with water streams flowing across the road). The road was very bad in patches and any car's suspension will take a beating. You will have to drive over fairly big and possibly slippery stones. Saw one or two Santros/Altos/800's go though that terrain with some difficulty.

That is the kind of road condition you can expect in late September.
