AFAIK, a crumple zone is a spot on the body which is made such that it sort of crumples up on impact thereby absorbing the shock and preventing it from reacing the occupants. Practically the crumple zones act to reduce the impact reaching the occupants.

As for fibreglass I guess even that can be used in a crumple zone...the word "crumple" here signifies that the particular area will absorb the impact before it can reach inside. It is a mechanically designed joint/area which will readily give way on impact. Crumple doesn't literally mean crumpling (like a piece of paper) but when you see the overall car being hit by an impact these zones appear as if they give way first - and the car appears to sort of get crumpled.

Crumple actually means to crumple. The acceleration energy of the impact, is utilised in crumpling the section, so that it doesn't reach the occupants. And the occupants remain safe.

But I really don't think, crumple zone is possible in fibreglass. If it, then do throw some light on it and I will be eager to know about it.

I tried this and I had understeer, I tried that and I had oversteer, at the end of the corner I just ran out of talent!

Mustang, crumple zone has less to do with the external body material and more with structures that make up the hull. Yes, fibreglass will probably break instead of simply crumpling like a steel sheet would...but that's not the point of crumple zones. These are underlying structures that are the first to give way so that most of the impact is absorbed (i.e., the car deforming) before any force is transmitted to the occupants.

I find it extremely amusing to find people arguing about crumple zones in a Maruti Alto.

Please, carry on.

Yes, Rohit, I understand what you mean. But my point isn't that. I just answeredf to what you said that crumple zone doesn't realy has to crumple. Wink

@Charles - Does alto not have crumple zones...? I mean, it has to have some safety built in...

Ahhh. That was sarcastic.

-this idea about making 'crumple zones from FRP' is so absurd!!

-Sheet metal and structural elements are entirely different(regarding crumple zones).

Charles can draw the middle ground here-he is the man behind all this

It does have safety built in. They're called "three-point seat belts".

Ever seen an Alto get into a crash? I don't mean to scare you, but you gets what you pays for.

Seatbelts yes...but I have to agree that smaller cars look worse than bigger ones in the event of a crash Laughing

Jokes apart, it is unfortunate as it is to be in a collision (in spite of driving safely)...and if the car isn't upto it, its tragic. That said, I guess we cannot quantify what a "safe" collision is, or what is the safe limit for a car...

Edit: The earlier post was when I entered a wrong email id (which is non-existent in the system)...
