I bought a Fiat Palio Stile (Petrol) five months back and it has already developed multiple problems, the worst being a gearbox problem. The dealer has said that they will have it rectified. Should I press for changing the entire gearbox unit? I have been waiting for TWO weeks for the problem to be rectified (the dealer has said that they are waiting for a spare part to arrive from Fiat)

Fiat Palio owners - let me know if you have experienced similar problems and what is your suggestion to handle this issue.

Note: I have driven a Hyundai Santro with not a single problem for over three years and I wish went in for a Hyundai again

hello prabu.

some times such problems create due to some defect or so but ur dealer is getting it replaced & ur car will be ok. let the part come from fiat & just chill. fiat is a very good brand with excellent build quality.

The dealer will not agree for changing the entire gear box - it may not be required.  Once the problem is rectified, I don't think it will reoccur. Palio gears are stiffer than Santro & the like but are not known to be a problem.  Like Deepam has said, Palio is a good brand with excellent build quality.

maruti swift diesel and indica vista diesel are using same  palio engine.indica vista used original palio gear box while maruti swift used  some other gear box(may be from suzuki or elsewhere),  i took the test drive of both , and , felt that gear shifting in swift is smoother than in indica vista, this  might be the reason for swift to opt differnt and better than original gearbox  even on more price (swift is approx.50000 costlier than indica vista diesel).

what i conclude gear box in swift is better (even on more price)

Swift gear box is Maruti's own, as I understand.  But it isn't costier (40/50K)than Vista for that reason.

Hi,

I use a Palio Stile 1.6 Sport for close to a year now. I would like to put forth my experience with the palio gear box here. Initially yes, due to the heavy torque of the engine, i always had that feeling that the clutch is too tight and makes it difficult to drive in the city, later as i started using it more often, i understood that it does get easy as time progresses.

Secondly yes, there is an ample space of improvement when it comes to gearbox for the palio stile. You may be impressed to know the fact that its rarest of rare that fiat palio has a gearbox problem. You may would also wish to check this with the fiat groups in other countries as well. Secondly it also depends on the way you drive your Car. Let me get some more statistics from my mechanic and put that down here.

Lets keep sharing, happy abt this forum. This will help us in maintaining our cars. bye for now

Long time ago, I had a word with a friend of mine, whose dad is a dealer of Tata and they bought the Stile, when it was newly launched and those days he told me the initial lot of Stile 1.1 had incorrect gear ratios. And he asked me to wait until and unless the new lot arrives if at all I buy the new car. So thread starter did you buy the Stile when it was newly launched?

I tried this and I had understeer, I tried that and I had oversteer, at the end of the corner I just ran out of talent!

-are sure about the incorrect ratio's?

-'correct' ratio's technically means a 'new different ' gear box.

-how can the company make such a big mistake by putting in 'wrong gear ratio's'-this is beyond logic-kindly provide some clarification-thanks

I have been driving a 2002 Palio (pre-NV) for quite sometime now. My experience with the gearbox has been extremely good. In fact I find the gear selection extremely precise, despite of the fact that the car done close to 40,000 kms. Not a single complaint as far as gearbox is concerned.

Clutch is definitely hard to operate. Whenever I drive another car (any car for that matter) for a couple of days and go back to drive my car, I feel, something has gone wrong with the clutch. My leg starts paining. However, as I drive the car for a couple of hours, I get used to it.

@Mustang, Even I feel that a mistake like incorrect gear ratios shouldn't happen with a car like Palio. Apart from the person who started this thread, I am yet to come across another such car with a gearbox problem.
