I have no reference in particular but as I understand, upsizing of 'wheels' normally affect ride-quality & resultantly the suspensions.

Luckily, no personal experience

Regarding the Indian/US roads, well... that was (my post) more in the lighter sense - nevertheless, our roads are 'obviously' more damaging (with or without upsizing)

I don't suspect any kind of damage to the suspension system unless and until the upsized size is not fitting well within the system. But yes, since you can say that there would be a little extra load on suspension as compared to earlier. Because higher profile tyres work as a separate suspension system themselves.

Even in India, GLS used to come with 14-inch wheels so going up till 15 is absolutely smooth task.

In general, do bigger 'wheels' normally fit well into the system - without affecting the suspensions?

Pankaj Ji this fear of 'bigger wheels' causing suspension problem arises because we are sold cars at a price. These cars are designed at an average wheels size- example 14" and then in different markets given options. The classic example is the Accent. We are sold with 13" wheels cause that will bring down the cost(tyre itself 1K less per tyre) while the more demanding western markets gets 14/15/16" wheels. Its all bussiness.

As Banwari rightly pointed out the tyres perse has a lot to do with the suspension. A 60 section Michelins will behave better than a 70 section JK. Sidewall flez though a measure of the section height also depends on  how the tyre is constructed and the materials used.

There is no problem in upsizing with 1 or 2 " more wheels and tyres.

Indian market is not mature enough to offer different rim sizes by the manufacturer themselves-excepting luxury cars/performance cars - like porsche/lambo/BMW etc

Notwithstanding the perspective you have explained, which I totally understand & appreciate, upsized wheels would generally affect suspensions due to the extra load.  The amount of effect may depend from car to car & their designs - may be negligible in some & considerable in others.  Besides, it would also depend upon the road conditions - say, here in India it would stand true while it may not in other countries, like the US.

Binoy, please address me Pankaj - no Ji & all that. Thanks

thanks binoy for the information, but pankaj is also rite to some extent that it may be advisable for some cars & negligible for some cars as our road conditions are different & that extra load can come into effect.

upsizing is fine. one needs to take ensure that that the tyres do not rub the body while turning. A few people I know put 195/55/15 on Honda city (old) vtec and then changed back to 185/65/14 as the 195's used to rub the inside of the wheel arch during turns. Preferable to stick to mfr recomended upsizes.

this is because of un-scientific ways of upgrading

-there is no need to stick on to original rims

-infact 195/15 can be mounted on the city without any problems-its the aspect ratio and the Pitch that one has to be careful about.
