Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone is aware of any site that has database of lost/found or stolen cars in India. Not sure if RTO or Police department maintains any such database. It would be so nice to have one if it doesn't exist. Those whose vehicle has been stolen can at least go there and check if it has been found in some state. Also second hand buyers can know if they are buying any stolen vehicle.
Any takers to initiate this project ?
Regards

Sandesh,

Your post has the answer in itself! I guess the only place where such an exercise can be most effectively carried out would be our RTO offices. However RTO rules are state specific. And hence doing an integration would be a real tough task.

Let alone integration across states, within a state / city itself the RTO's are not networked properly. The best place in my opinion would be to go in for company registered second hand sales outlets. And you could always get the documents verified at the RTO before purchase (considering it is from within the same city).

Bhushan,

If I am not wrong, Police keeps a centralized record of stolen vehicles across the country. If one is buying a used car, he/she may wish to contact police inquiring for the status of the car. It helps.

If we believe that govt will take some action and our RTOs will implement a centralized country-wide system then we are dreaming and that too in broad day-light. The more transparency in the system, the less corrupt it would be. And who wants to stop corruption!

CarWale Android App is launched. Download by searching for CarWale in Android Market on your phone or using this link: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.carwale

I agree with you guys. Government wouldn't do anything for very obvious reasons.
Though they have centralized database and have ability tp provide any such information, how much do you think they will entertain a common man and that too without  chai-paani?

This needs to be done at the public level..a NGO maybe...

Here is one link I found. Something similar to this would be very helpful.
May be Carwale.com can start .
