With the aim to represent their College and Country in international events like the SAE Supermileage and the Shell Eco-Marathons,   a group of enthusiastic and like-minded students comprising of Team Leader Nishant, and members Kayaan, Darshan, Bharat, Jacob, Krishna, Gautham and Rakshit from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, R.V. College of Engineering, Bangalore developed a shared vision to build a super fuel efficient car- the outcome is “PROJECT GARUDA- RVCE SUPERMILEAGE CAR” which gives an amazing mileage of  about 200 KMs/litre and is slated to give a mindboggling 500 KMs/litre in due course.

The product of an untiring effort by the group of students “GARUDA-RVCE SUPERMILEAGE CAR” was unveiled on Saturday August 2, 2008 at the RV College of Engineering, Bangalore by none other than Mr. Dilip Chhabria of DC fame, an internationally renowned authority on car design and concepts. After having evaluated the features of the car and understanding from the students the specific design details, Mr. Chhabria expressed his great sense of confidence and appreciation of the design and technological capability of students in achieving this fantastic mileage. He specially praised the team’s efforts considering the global relevance and highlighted the need for such innovations in light of current oil-crisis and the need for “green” technologies.

Yeah, some sort of publicity gimmic... using cycle tyres, a very low fibreglass body and sticking some rediculous weed-whacker engine in it does not make it a car. It should be street worthy, capable of carrying at least two adults + some luggage, and have a decent range to be practically usable. otherwise there are enough toy/model cars to play with in the market...

Not to disparage the effort, but this kind of distracts from serious endevours in the direction of fuel efficient cars. However, the effort by students would have taught them a lot, which they should aspire to put into practice to design 'real' cars. Hopefully they will, if they do not end up writing some invoicing module in some business sw company....

It's an achievement indeed and, as stated by Krishna, the participants must have learned a lot that they would put-in in desiging real cars - fuel efficient - in future. All the best to them.
