I want to install an anti theft system for my i10 Magna. The Hyundai guys tell me that they have Autocop and that the top end with an immobiliser comes for 5500 (including fitting charges) with a 3 year warranty. However, Xenos seems to have a life time warranty. Which one should I go for? Also, I read in a few forums that the immobiliser can be rendered useless by virtue of some demagnetisers - sorry I have absolutely no clue about these stuff. And therefore, a mechanical gear lock would be a better option. Which one do I put?

Almost all new cars are now having immobiliser. In such cars, is a gear lock really of much use ? The car theft cases are on the rise. Is it that mostly the older cars, which came without the immobiliser, are being stolen? Experts, please opine.

its like the more the merrier...anyone trying to steel the car would have to spend bit more time to boost the car so they usually avoid such cars..so its better to have gear locks too as per me..!!!..

I am also in the state of Sumit, I am buying the K10 and i believe the remote central lock is most required for safeguarding from car thiefs, checked with the delaer and he's quoting 4000 ( not sure if it is including fitting charge ) for autocop.

Confused really ? whether to go for this or not ? experts advises needed

i-10 Magna & K-10 both have id-46 (Phillips Crypto-2) immobiliser chip inside their keys. Both are password protected and even their clone can't be made without the original key and car (both of them are required simultaneously for making clone). You just need a remote locking and Autocop's basic model costs in range of 2500-2800, depending upon design of remote.

Gear lock is must but it is obvious if he has access to your immobilizer key, either by stealing the key, or you have lost it, then he also has access to gear lock key because it must have been in same keyring with car key, so of little use. Morover Gear lock can't prevent your valuable kept in car safe.

If he doesn't have your immobilizer key then he can tow the car, independent of whether you have immobilizer with gear lock or not.

I have seen that remote locking is more for convinience than for safety.

Dear Yogesh Arora. I highly appreciate your view.. Being master in making Car Remote/ Key with Remote, can you please explain, why N no of cars are stolen, evenif it has immobilser built in to it. I know few of my relatives and freind who have lost their Scorpio, Safari and Wagon-r. All of them have cars with Immobilizer. Is it the Service ppl who are changing the codes or de-activate the immobilzers or they are making clone at the time of service or repair.. You knowledge will be definitely help ppl to take appropricate decision. Thanking you in Advance.

Thank You for your appreciation

I may not able to tell you exactly how these people do this but can provide few of examples by which it is possible or not possible. Information here provided is for educational-purpose only.

Scorpio : (before 2010) : no immobiliser : very easy to make a copy of key

Scorpio : (2010+) : immobiliser (id 46) : very difficult to clone : 5 minute ignition lock present (In case a wrong key, non-immobiliser key is used to start the car, car won't start even with genuine key for next 5 minutes)

Wagon R : (before 2007) : no immobiliser : Easy to make a key

Wagon R : (2007 - 2010 March) : immobiliser (id 65) : Weak Immobiliser, Clone can be made from the key.

Wagon R : (2010 March+) : immobiliser (id 46) : clone possible but very difficult. Even workshop/Service station needs master password which comes with spare key if ordered from company.

Safari :  : no immobiliser : Easy to make key

Safari :  : old immobiliser (ID 13) : Easy to clone, very weak security

Safari : New : immobiliser (Id 46) : Same as other ID 46 Keys

**********************************************************

Generally new immobiliser are of High security (not easy to clone) types like ID 46 or ID 48 (found in Skoda/Volkswagen etc.). These cars genrally becomes vulnerable when you loose your car key.

The best part is that all new sensor systems have (Key erasing option) so that you may get your key (which is lost) erased from car memory. Car dealers / modern Locksmiths have these facility. You may try your local dealer for such options.

Hey Guys,

In our country we have the tendency to first find loop holes in anything.

People can break any kind of locks, codes..you name it thiefs can break it.

Even the digital speedometer readings can be changed. It hardly takes 10-15 mins for that.

So personally, if your car is parked outside your building or has low security in your area, I recommend multiple locks.

After all spending 3-5K on locks can prevent loss of 5-7 lakhs, then why not.

Cheers

KD

There is nothing wrong in finding loop holes..

If we know our weakness then only we can work on it to strengthen ourselves...Its not our tendency to find loop-holes but it is our curiosity, which asks why something works or not works. It is this curiosity which helps the system to evolve and find new and better ways of doing work...

Absolute fool-proof systems are only in dreams...

Even multiple locks have its limitations, It may be very hard sytem to break, but in our very-busy lives, who has so much time to apply these locks each times he parks his cars....

Innocent

@ Yogesh,

My comment was made in general & not at you. So direct dil me mat le yaar.

The issue is not when everytime someone parks his car, multiple locks can certainly be of help when the car is parked in the open overnight & you do not have a security person to keep an eye on it.

Plus HYPOTHETICALLY if one lock takes 5 mins to crack, 2 will probably take more time, you never know when the additional time someone can spot a thief.

Better safe than sorry bro.

KD
