Hi Friends,

I recently read review of VW Jetta. It is mentioned that it consists Turbo Charger as well as Super Charger. Super charger is to overcome the turbo lag upto 2000 RPM. After 2000 RPM crossed, it will switch over to Turbo charge.

I am wondering if it is possible to add a Super charger to existing turbo charged vehicle. I am using Indigo LX which is turbo charged and facing the same problem og turbo lag creating difficulty in city driving. Highway driving no problem.

Could you all contribute your comments.

In my opinion, adding a supercharger onto the Indigo LX might not be a good idea. And i think so because Mileage would suffer (especially in city) as the fuel intake would be more. Also i dont think cars made in India are as yet customised for such alterations. I enquired if the current range of Indigo cars be post-purchase fitted with ABS (higher XL version & Safari has ABS) and the dealer replied in the negative.

This is not to say that it is not possible. Just that it could be too much of a hassle.

  • Finding a good quality & trustworthy mechanic would be an issue
  • Any alterations with car design would probably void the car warranty

This is just my opinion. Found the following 2 good & interesting links on this:

  1. Carwale article @ http://www.carwale.com/research/articles/turbocharger.aspx
  2. Turbodiesel details @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbodiesel

The second link has a section on Turbodiesels in the Unites States which goes like this:

Mercedes reintroduced turbodiesel technology with the 2005 E320 CDI. Boasting a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 6.6 s and fuel consumption of 37 mpg, the full year production estimate of 3000 CDIs were ordered within five months. Even more recently, however, Mercedes introduced the BlueTec diesel engine. Offering a 3.0 liter V6, as well as urea injection and particulate filters, the E320 BlueTec has been named the cleanest turbodiesel offered in the United States.

Hello,

I would like to know if "Intercooler" can be fitted on to Innova D4D. I do not know if it is required at all, but seeing that it is just a Turbo CRDI engine thought about this.

Regards,

Srinath

I don't think it is feasible, and required.

INTERCOOLER

"An intercooler, or charge air cooler, is an air-to-air or air-to-liquid heat exchange device used on turbocharged and supercharged (forced induction) internal combustion engines to improve their volumetric efficiency by increasing intake air charge density through isochoric cooling. A decrease in air intake temperature provides a denser intake charge to the engine and allows more air and fuel to be combusted per engine cycle, increasing the output of the engine."

"An efficient intercooler removes heat from the air in the induction system, preventing the cyclic heat build-up via the turbocharger, allowing higher power outputs to be achieved without damage."

Taken from LINK

-----------------------------------------

Looking into this definition of need of a turbo intercooler, when we have a look at the D4D's performance @ LINK, it would add upto slightly higher power rating and subsequently lesser time to run from 0-100kmph.

This would be however at the risk of voiding the vehicle warranty. A faulty installation could damage the turbo charger and possibly the cylinder head/block too. The Innova does not come with a company fitted Intercooler. So i guess the Innova is doing fine even without it.

@Topic starter: don't go down that road. It's a world full of pain.

@Innova man: you don't need it - you'll spend anything from 50k to a lakh for a negligible gain in performance. You want that much of a gain, see if you lay your hands on a Pete's or TunIt box for the Innova instead.

Fitting a supercharger sounds interesting. But car isn't really that interesting. Fitting a supercharger won't just burn your pocket but it would put a lot of load on your engine as well. And I belive superchargers are made for petrol engines. But you can go for the add-on ECM if its available for Indigo.

I tried this and I had understeer, I tried that and I had oversteer, at the end of the corner I just ran out of talent!

Thanks all for your comments.

I am very sorry for a delayed reply. It was just a concept which came ino my mind and I noted down here.

Also its not feasible for an Indigo since the cost factor. Spending 50K to 1Lakh for Indigo means around 20% of its cost makes no sense.

But one thing I am confused, why super chargers only for Petrol engines only?

Superchargers are used in high load diesel engines like that of the multi axle MAN/Scania and Actros trucks to eliminate the turbo lag.

The supercharger is not as efficient as the turbo as the former uses engine power to provide the boost-hence the more effective solution is used-ie turbocharging.

In petrol cars the low compression and reduced rate of evacuation of gases leads to decrease in efficiency of the turbo charger and hence the engine driven supercharger is more used.

Binoy i didnt get the part about the turbo charger.
wht exactly does a turbocharger do? Supercharger uses the engine power to provide a boost . what abt Turbo?
