I have transferred my Maruti 800 from Hyd to Blore without getting NOC (due to time constraints). Now what are the likely implications because of this?

1) Can I pay the road tax in Bangalore without NOC from AP. Is this allowed? How necessary is paying road tax in Karnataka?

2) Can I re-register the vehicle in Bangalore without NOC from AP. Is that possible? Can any RTO agent be of any help?

3) If I need to sell the car in Bangalore, how important is it to have a Karnataka registration?

4) If I am going to return to Hyd after 2-3 years, do I really need to register the vehicle in Karnataka?

Looking for some helo guys. Thanks.

Adi

Adi,

I think paying road tax in Karnataka should not be an issue (i will check and get back). But for getting your vehicle registered in Karnataka you would definitely need the NOC from AP. I am not sure if the RTO agent in Karnataka could help you with the process of getting NOC from AP. However to get the NOC from AP (if your car is in AP at that time) is not a big deal. If you know someone in RTO Hyderabad then no problem at all.

Basically if you are using roads of any state over longer period of time then you need pay road tax there. Frankly, the system is not functioning correctly or else while you were entering Karnataka your vehicle papers would have been updated with the date of entry into Karanataka. So there is a reference of your entry. Beyond 6months to a year of stay in Karnataka you would be required to pay road tax.

Changing number (re-registration) is not neccessary if you would be the vehicle owner. Changing numbers is not neccessary even if you are selling car in Karnataka. But this may not fetch you a good price while selling as buyer would enetually have to re-register as it is easier to track details of Karanataka vehicle than a non-Karanataka vehicle in Karanataka. Re-registration would ensure that all you current details (address etc) would get updated in the RC book of the vehicle.

However this is not as simple as this. Because it is difficult to convince the RTO police, once they catch you without having paid road tax in these 2-3 years of your stay. Best would be to pay road tax.

I heard one must inform migration to the RTO within 30 days & pay road tax within 90 days. NOC is mandatory to pay tax, but if you go through agents they do some 'goal-mall' and pay the tax without NOC(I wonder how they do it). NOC is valid for at the most 6 months(minimum 30 days). Before it expires we must apply for re-regiatration. In fact I heard that if we directly approach the RTO, they will ask for proof of residence in B'Lore(along with NOC). Paying road tax & re-regiatration are actually linked with each other.

Regarding the RTO, strictly speaking ...., as long as the addresses on your docs. are non-KA you can always claim that u r a visitor. The RTO must have some proof that u reside in KA if they have to fine u. But its not easy to deal with them.

Hi,

I will be shifting to Hyderabad from Bangalore in about a month. I had paid lifetime road tax in Bangalore when I bought a car here. I will be staying in Hyderabad for NOT more than a year. Can anyone help me on what I need to do to transfer my vehicle? Do I need only a NOC from Bangalore RTO, or do I have to pay road tax in Hyderabad? Are there any other things that need to be taken care of, here inBangalore or Hyderabad? My car is 1.5 years old.

Regards,

Diganta Baishya,

Bangalore.

RTO rules vary/differ a little from state to state.

To my understanding, for using a car for a period not more than 1 year, no re-registration is required - you only need to pay 1-year tax.  However, in some states, there's no provision for 1-year tax.  In such states, the entire tax is required to be paid - the same can be refunded once you relocate back to the earlier state.

See if you can ascertain the details locally from Hyderabad.

Hi,

I have trasfered to Bangalore from other state for 3 years. I dont want to register my vehicle in Karnataka. Nor do I wish to have a Karnataka registration number. Is there a facility to pay Annual raod tax in Karnataka to use my car here? How much yearly tax I need to pay for a 6 plus years old car with purchase value of 4 lacs and current Insurance value of 1.77 lacs of my car. Is a NOC required in this case. Please will some expert reply to my query.

Thanks for you help.

I don't think there's any provision for paying tax annually.  In some states 1-year tax is acceptable for temp. relocation not exceeding 1-year.  Otherwise, life-time tax is payable & re-registration is required.

Hi,

NOC is not required for paying tax in Bangalore. You can just pay life time road tax and drive the vehicle (the cops are also happy with this). As per rule, you need to re-register the vehicle within an year of paying tax, so for that NOC is required. Annual tax can be paid only if the vehicle is in the name of a central govt employee or defense personnel. Otherwise you need to pay life time tax itself. As per Karnataka RTO rules (this update was given to me by RTO office itself) you will get refund of the excess amount once you leave the state (for which I guess NOC of Karnataka and tax challan of newly entering state is required).

It is better to pay tax if you plan to be in the state for more than a year for preventing unnecessary harassment. Infact I got caught by the RTO authorities, they  siezed the DL and original RC book (this happened a couple of months back). I paid tax and they returned the docs. They also stamped the receipt and told that I can get NOC and re-register the vehicle within an year.

Also from what I enquired, you can manage to get NOC (without showing the vehicle) on appearing in person and showing the original RC and other necessary docs.

Regards,

Sinu

Hi guys,

I would be in Bangalore till mid next year and want to bring my brand new 2 wheeler (Royal Enfield Electra) from my hometown - Faridabad. Post Aug 2011, I would be going back to Faridabad, Haryana. So, I would be in Bangalore for 10-11 months. My questions -

1. Do I have to re-register my bike in Bangalore?

2. Am I allowed to travel around with a Haryana number plate. If yes, do I still need to pay the life time road-tax in Bangalore (Its around 8K). Please note that I'm here for just 10-11 months.

3. An RTO Agent assured me that he could get me an annual road tax document which could cost around 1500 (including his commission). I would have to pose as a defence personel. Does this work with the cops? I work for a private organisation, without any documentary proof that Im with the defence forces.

4. What if I carry around proof (in the form of airline tickets) that I would be leaving Bangalore in a few months. (Documentary proof can be easily managed - MS Word editing of previous tickets). I would ofcourse retain the copy of the train 'ticket' with which the bike was brought to Bangalore.

3. Tips and tricks to handle the cops ;) Just in case they try to harass me..what is the standard amount with which they can be gagged.

Regards,

Mrinal Mukherjee
