Hello everyone, I have decided to buy Tata Indigo(2005 used). It is mentioned it is IDI engine. What is IDI? and What is TDI? Which one is good? From when on Tata has introduced IDI? Is IDI engine used only for a short span of time by Tata and later on switched to TDI? What was before IDI? Is IDI fuel efficient? The owner of the car says the car gives only 12 kms in city with AC. But I have heard Tata Indigo gives arround 17 to 18 in city with AC. Is TDI a special version which is smoother with less mielage? Is IDI engine a succesful engine compared with TDI and the ones before IDI? Pls can you help me out?

hi solomon , i dont think TATA have introduced any diesel engine called the IDI , but in the Badge the T top line must have Got cut and u must have read it IDI , i feel its TDi itself , earlier Indigo was coming with Normal diesel engine but in 05 they have introduced the TDi ( Turbo) engine! i hope no more confusions!

Well i dont understand why are you going for a Used TATA diesel car ?? i would say better buy the Used Palio DIesel or the Petra Diesel if not the Esteem diesel all these 2 are bettter than the Used INDIGO!

Cheers,
Sri

Hi, This car I mentioned has run less kms and maintained well. I have read IDI from the rubber pad over the engine.I am sure it is IDI.If it is TDI it would have been mentioned in the read od the car.

As far as i remember IDI stands for Indirect Diesel Injection. The diesel cars/vehicles which TATA manufactured prior to getting a Turbo fitted to meet Euro norms were referred to as IDI engines. Even now we can see Indica's which are non-Turbo plying on city roads.

In my opinion the prime difference would be the throttle response which one gets. In TDI due to the Turbo there is a surge in power around 2000rpm mark. Otherwise in the non-turbo one would have to rev till 2500rpm to gain good useable power. The basic engine type remains the same. I.e. Indirect Diesel Injection. The more recent engine type is the Direct Injetcion type (DI). This is TATA-termed as DiCOR (Direct Injection Common Rail) which apparently provides better power delivery from around 1500-1800 rpm.

Indigo "TDI" is basically a Indirect Injection with turbo charger. TDI stands for Turbo Diesel with Inter cooler. In this TATA had introduced a Inter cooler along with a turbo charger.

Indigo DICOR is a Direct Injection Common Rail Engine.

I don't think Indigo TDI gives 17 to 18 Kms/litre in city with AC. I am using same TDI Indigo and it gives around 13 to 14 in city with 25% AC.

That's true. I too am getting around 12 in city with AC always on. And it could be (i am not sure) around 13-14 with 25% AC. Have to check. If i am not wrong then best time to check mileage would be when the car has clocked couple of thousand kms (especially for diesel).

17-18 could be true for Tata Indica. I don't think that is true for the Indigo. In another couple of weeks i would be taking my Indigo to a trip to Mysore and back (to Bangalore). So may be i would be in a better position to comment.

It is definitely a good car to buy. A new version of Indigo is being tested i guess. Either this year end or starting next year it should be released. With better design and better engines.

Hi All, Thankyou very much for all your replies. I have a fair idea about the variants of Indigo and its mileage. Thanks a lot.

When we are it, thought good to put it here.

Air pressure in the tube apparently does impact the mileage (and the wear & tear over the longer run). In the manual for Indigo it is recommended to use 27psi for all 4 wheels. Whereas some people recommend that front tyres (bearing the engine load) should be filled for 29/30 psi whereas rear tyres should be filled for 27/28 psi. Does this have any significant bearing on mileage?

Bhushan, I checked the mileage of Fiesta on highway... I calculated 20.44 kmpl, with good use of a.c. too... when I went to the service centre n mentioned that I got less than 21, the guy asked about load n air pressure.... We were 4 with heavy luggage. N the air pressure was 30.... then he showed me that with Full Load... it should 40.

With Indica DLG... well I got upto 19 on highways.

People dont change when you tell them that there is a Better option... They change when they realise that there is No Other Option..
