Government to subsidize electric vehicles!
Just read this news! And all who complain about the price of Reva please read it: http://www.thestatesman.net/page.news.php?clid=12&theme=&usrsess=1&id=208809

By the way, great numbers kk. But remember, the main pollutants are carbon monoxide emissions which you don't have in your reply. In Coal power plants, they must be minimal or zero I think. Even then, from your numbers it seems that CO2 emissions are twice the number for a gasoline car.

Now think about all this when the price of petrol becomes 75 or 100 Rs! Believe me, that day is not too far away.

It was very interesting to read all the related discussion especially as the owner of a Reva electric car for 2 years. I bought an AC model in June 2006 for close to 4 lakhs and have used it for 13000 km till date and yes, the practical running cost is not 40p but 60paise/km. The batteries are still good, now gives me 45-50 km/charge compared to 65-70 km initially, so I believe they will last for 2 more years, maybe even 3. Surely the initial cost is high but if you can use it for 12000 km/year you get your money's worth, no doubt about it. The car has the comfort of a 4-wheeler and the convenience of a 2-wheeler, that's my description as a user. I no longer worry about traffic or parking woes, the automatic drive is kids play and tension free. The car is solid, I have been banged from behind by a BMTC bus and only the tail lights broke, no dent at all. Any other car would have cost me tinkering and painting. That's because this is made of ABS plastic which absorbs the shock and regains shape to a large extent. It's also true that it requires minimum maintenance, my 6 months regular service costs Rs.700 now (used to be 400). Self-maintenance is however important, like watering the batteries once a month and load equilization, again once a month. And if a regular charge-discharge pattern is done it will ensure longer battery life. Over the last 2 yrs I have interacted with many reva owners and NONE of them were unhappy with their purchase, though most had their own share of complaints. Even I'd say that an actual range of 90-100 km would have been great but still I don't regret buying the car for the unparalleled convenience it offers. Sadly I'm soon going to sell the car as I'm going out of the country for an extended period and the car won't be used frequently by others at home. If anyone's looking to buy an used Reva in 2 weeks from now, I can give the link to the for-sale online ad I'd soon be placing. All in all, the Reva is a fantastic innovation and thumbs up to the Bangalore Maini group who made this a possibility. In fact, it's the cheapest roadworthy electric car in the world, something to be proud of as an Indian.

Hi,

I am looking to buy a new/used Reva immediately. Please contact me at indira502@hotmail.com. I have always loved this car and my sister in Chennai has been happily using her for years. Now with the skyrocketing fuel prices, driving anything else for the daily commute seems absurd.

Hi Ajo,
I am glad that you are thinking of buying a green car. The pollution level is going very high and I think people should opt for eco-friendly car to save our earth. REVA a very good car and about the price, the price has been cut down but only for the Bangalore
Every vehicle carries a risk; one has to be careful while driving. There are other company like Ajanta-the clock makers are also planning to roll out an eco-friendly car.

Hi,
Just finished making a down payment on the Revai standard model. Its the new version and the sales people were convincing. Go for it - it makes huge sense in these times of increased petrol costs!

Reva as we all know is the first electric car that is introduced in India.Being electric it has many profits to the consumers. It is cheaper to petrol as it gives a very efficient mileage in the cost of one litre petrol that is very much appreciable. It is environmental friendly and doesn't emit any smoke particles. But the main point is will it be able to last longer than petrol cars? Will the engine be able to support the consumers for a longer time? That will be a good observation in the near future to see...

My sister has owned her Reva in Chennai for more than five years and has had almost no major maintenance problems - she drives daily to and from work. In fact people say it is safe to go for a second hand Reva, since there is not much wear and tear and only the batteries need to be replaced.
