Hi,

I am Rajesh. Recently I purchased a Tata Indigo with Turbo IDI engine. Dealer asked me about my daily running and suggested a Petrol version. But I was not sure about Tata's petrol engine and was more interested in Diesel only.

My question is:

Diesel or Petrol engine decision is based on daily running. If running is less than 1000 kms /month, petrol is suggested since diesel engines are costly compare to Petrol. And if running is less, Petrol engine is recommended.Apart from cost factor, is there any need for more running for diesel engine essential to keep it maintained ? Also is it required to start the engine daily? I am interested only in technical point of view and not at all from daily running cost. I know, I had spend 50K extra for diesel but that is immaterial in this context. I am concern only to maitain the health of my engine.

Your suggestions would be of great help.

Rajesh,

Except for the cost factor there is nothing else that you should be worried about here. Even if you drive your diesel car 10 kms per week, that's more than enough. There is no lower running limit for a diesel or petrol car. If you don't mind paying extra price for the diesel engine, there is nothing left to discuss here.

Moreover, since your dilemma is about Indigo, my personal suggestion would be you go for diesel Indigo. The extra price you will pay for diesel Indigo will be compensated in running and resale value.

Thanks Sharmaji,

Yes I had already purchased a Indigo diesel.

My doubts were regarding diesel engine running and that are now very well cleared by you.

Thanks again

@karthikey

You may like to read my anyalisis of petrol vs diesel car, for sure if you run higher than 30000-50000kms per year diesel will give you cost advantage, my post is 8 months old but worth reading & based on that you can do a present cost anyalisis.

For 300 - 500 km per month, diesel is not advised for paying extra premium over petrol. Your running is not big enough to compensate for more diesel car price.

Driving is privilage, not a right.

in todays time you buy a petrol car and got it cng fit....and pay around 40,000rs for cng kit...so if we compare it to diesel thn we are just paying 50,000rs more....which can be covered in maximum 2 years..

Saurabh,

Its advisable to go for a diesel only if your running is 1000kms in a month.
