Palio & Swift both have the same (Fiat) engine 1248 CC engine that delivers 75ps of power @ 4000rpm & 184nm of torque @ 2000rpm.  Both give mileage of 17/18 in city & 21/22 on highway (depending upon driving conditions & style).

I would recommend for Palio for more space/comfort, better ride-quality/suspensions, built & boot.  Besides, Palio is cheaper. The only advantage Swift has is the Maruti factor / network - but Palio/Tata network is not bad either - 2nd to Maruti.

For academic reasons let me add that the engines in both are not exactly the same the swift uses a different turbo unit and different ECM settings and hence the torque are no the same the swift has a higher rating (190nm).

Thanks Binoy, I stand corrected.  Yes, Swift delivers 190nm of torque against Palio's 184nm, for the reasons state.  And by the way, I have quoted it wrongly elsewhere also

Anway, notwithstanding the marginal/negligible difference, Palio I would recommend ahead of Swift for the reasons stated before.

Hi,

Apologies, Me, one of the Prasads was out on a short trip to Hyderabad and Delhi and hence a delay. But, the other Prasad literally mentioned everything that I would have.

Palio is way above Swift in most of the departments - Swift probably has the only advantage that it is a Maruti - hence resale value and number of service stations would be slightly better - that said, Palio literally sweeps in all departments - bigger car, stronger car, much better interiors space, much better suspensions and the best part is the price - you pay about 1 lakh less for it - go happily book a Palio and drive it for 50000 kms for the 1 lakhs saved.

You would typically get the Palio in a matter of about 1 to 2 weeks time as suggested by Pankaj.

Cheers,

K Prasad

Prasad (Both),

Please correct me. From the above, it sounds like Palio is better than Swift. I will extend it little that since Swift and Dzire has no difference except for Boot and some back seat inclination, Palio would be better than Dzire also.Dzire is 60K more than Swift, hence 160K more than Palio. Only difference Sedan and Hatchback.

I had booked Dzire with a looooong waiting (3 months). Now I am thinking of Palio Diesel.

I appreciate your guidance in this matter.

well both prasads have told exactly what you were looking ofr

palio is definately is an excellent car but i suppose its somewhat sluggish as far as pick up is concerned. again since you are going in for diesel both the cars are more o less the same except for a negligible fuel efficiency differences. swift gets hit badly when it comes to seating in the rear row. palio is very spacious. boot space also is very good in palio. swift sells more than palio mainly because its marutis baby. maruti has got a very huge network of service stations and there is absolutely no problem with servicing and the maintenance is also cheap. palio did not sell mainly due to these facts. spare parts were somewhat difficult to get and service stations were not that easily accessible but now with the fiat-TATA merger for after sales service, i guess that problem would also be solved. so by all means palio is the choice to be made

Why break rules when following them is much easier!!!

Rajesh / Sri Sub,

Palio Diesel we are referring to is not at all sluggish - as compared to Swift/Dzire.  In fact, Dzire is slightly sluggish as compared to Swift - especially with AC on & while accelarating (without changing to lower gear).  Palio & Swift both give milege at par (discussed before), while Dzire gives a little less (by 1 km or so).

Therefore, if boot space is not required often, one can consider Palio ahead of Dzire too & save Rs.1.60 lac.
