By the way, boot space of the 3 cars are.... Dzire 440, Swift 232 & Palio 260 (in case of Dzire, it varies a little in some versions).

Hi Achuta,

Guess what? I have enquired and the wait period for Swift VDi is more than 6 months! Kalyani Motors (Mysore Rd.) sales guy says, they have even stopped taking Swift bookings temporarily!

Please let me know if some dealer promises a delivery any sooner. LDi arent available either!!

Thanks, Ravi

@ Achuta, Palio is recommended ahead of Swift not because of only more of legroom & boot space but also for its better ride-quality/suspensions, overall comfort & stronger built, and that, you get all that at a lesser price.

Anyway, congratulations for finalising.  Please post us with your experiences - it will benefit all. Thanks

Dear sir,

My driving is about 500 Km per month in city driving. Can I opt for a Diesel car like Maruti Swift VDI or Maruti Dzire diesel/
Will they be economical fuel wise as well as maintenance wise?

Or should I opt for Petrol Version only because of less driving?

What is the mileage following cars give in city driving?

Maruti Swift VDi
Maruti Dzire Diesel
Maruti Swift VXi
Maruti dzire Petrol

Palio Diesel

Palio Petrol

Petrol car is advisable for the type of run/usage you have.  Mileage of the cars listed by you are (depending upon driving conditions & style)....

  1. Swift Petrol: 12/13 in city & 16/17 on highway.
  2. Dzire Petrol: 11/12 in city & 15/16 on highway.
  3. Palio Petrol: 11/12 in city & 15/16 on highway.

  1. Swift Diesel: 17/18 in city & 21/22 on highway.
  2. Dzire Diesel: 16/17 in city & 20/21 on highway.
  3. Palio Diesel: 17/18 in city & 21/22 on highway.

Dear Mr. CK Jain,

Let us knock out the Sir - this one is a friendly org - no hierarchies over here.

For your usage, kindly rule out the petrol - the economics don't fit in - you will be at loss if you take a diesel car. The money you save per year by taking a diesel car is typically about 2 rupees per km. So, for 500 km a month, that is a saving of 12000 a year.

The initial cost of a diesel car is 75K - So, if you invest in a fixed deposit instead of going for a diesel car, the interest you will get in a 5 year term will be about 60K or in otherwords, 12K per year (approx). At the end of the term, you will still have the 75K with you, but if you go for a diesel car, you won't have it.

Diesel cars are for usage in excess of 1200-1300K. In my opinion, you should go for petrol and in petrol, Swift rules. Mind you that Swift has a bit of a leg space issue at the rear. Also the boot is quite small. If you want a big boot, go for dzire else Swift petrol. There is a min 6 months waiting for Dzire, so, better be prepared. If you are concerned with the legspace at rear and the boot space, then my suggestion would be to go for GETZ 1.3 which is an extremely competent car.

Palio petrol is not as good as the Palio diesel, I will not hence discuss it any forward.

Regards,

K Prasad

Dear Forum members (including PrasadS):

I drive an alto lxi, have TD experiences of i10, swift-Vxi, santro, stile 1.1, indigo gls etc. (unfortunately all petrol cars). While TD Stile 1.1 (petrol) I have noticed the following drawbacks:

1. Highly underpowered - particularly with a/c on,
2. Stiff steering, even appears as not powered, and
3. Tough gearshift.

It appears from your reviews that the first drawback is overcome in 1.3 MJD Palio. My question to you is how about the rest of problems. Would appreciate if you can give a comparative feedback w.r.to Swift/Alto’s power steering & gearshift. Infact I found all of swift, alto, santro, i10 and Indigo’s steerings are very easy, even at rest, which matters during parking the vehicle.

Though I am habituated in petrol car, currently exploring diesels because of enhanced comfort levels and engine power (I relied only on the tech. spec. as I have no experience in diesel so far).

The steering & gears are important so much because smooth drive quality is desired, as well as good seats that gives a straight posture (like santro/ i10) to avoid back-pains.

Please suggest.

CBhar

Dear CK Jain,

Diesel Car’s suits best for people who, at least, drive for about 50 Kms a day! This is true in my case. If you expect to drive about 500Kms per month, then I don’t think you should really go for a Diesel vehicle.

I suggest you should go far a Petrol Car – preferably Swift ZXi, I love this model, but I can’t afford to burn 3 Ltrs of petrol everyday! Besides, Swift Petrol is cheaper than the Diesel version.

 Best, Ravi

@ Chandan, briefly speaking ( you seem to have gone through various discussions on the subject).... Palio Diesel is a very good car - it is not at all sluggish like its Petrol counterpart nor does it have any steering & gear problems.
