While this is just another competition based test car built, it is woth reading though. Fact is that very high mileages are possible. - Bhushan

A high school team beat out students from 23 universities to take home the grand prize for designing, building and driving a vehicle that went the farthest distance using the least amount of fuel.

Not only that, but the students from Mater Dei High School of Evansville, Ind., set a new mileage record at the 2008 Shell Eco-marathon Americas, held over the weekend at the California Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

Their three-wheeled, combustion-engine vehicle achieved 2,843.4 miles per gallon.

Thanks Bhusan - as always, you have shared a good info/link

Good piece of information, Bhushan.

I wish we had this kind of activities in India as well. It would really be amazing to see our school kids doing stuff like this. I believe we have lots of talent, the only thing we need is to take the initiation.

In total agreement with you.

I remember it was so nice to read (i dont know which year this was) when ISRO was looking to tie up with a college for their cryogenic engine development locally and wanted to give it as an enginerring project. After long deliberation they decided to give it IIT Mumbai. Now i am not suggesting IIT Mumbai is best (i did not study there). But i was happy & proud that students were thought capable enough to help design such a critical project for the country.

I have also seen many programs on Discovery, where they show such competitions happening in Australia where students compete to develop more eco-friendly cars.

I think more the fuel prices take a northward turn in India, more the auto companies would be forced to think of better cars or alternate-fuel run cars. M&M has already testing Scorpio for bio-diesel i guess.Hoping to see more corporate participation & encouragement sooner or later.
