Hi All,

I'm planning to buy car in HYD and not able to select which one is a better among
 1. Wagon R DUO
 2. Indigo CS (I haven’t drive this car yet)

My One week average travel would be around 100 to 150 KM, looking for the one which suits my height (6' 3") and better driving comfort has Less Maintenance, Good Mileage and Re-sale value, my budget is around 4 to 4.3L.

If there are any other options apart from Wagon R and Indigo CS please let me know.

Also how far do you suggest/rate Diesel to Petrol/LPG??

Advance Thanks,

-Kalyan

  1. WagonR DUO LX (Rs.3.48 lac) & LXi (Rs.3.69 lac) have 1061 CC engines that deliver 67ps of power @ 6200rpm & 84nm of torque @ 3500rpm, and give mileage on Petrol of 14/15 in city & 17/18 on highway. When used on LPG, the engine performance is reduced by 10-15% & mileage reduces to approx. 12/13 in city & 15/16 on highway.
  2. WagonR (exclusively Petrol) has 5 versions – cost ranging from Rs.3.29 lac to Rs.4.50 lac. Engine CC, Power, Torque & Mileage are same as in DUO.

  1. Indigo (Diesel) CS LE TDi (Rs.4.25 lac) & LS TDi (Rs.4.54 lac) have 1405 CC engines that deliver 70ps of power @ 4500rpm & 135nm of torque @ 2500rpm, and give mileage of 15/16 in city & 18/19 on highway.
  2. Indigo (Petrol) CS GLE (Rs.3.79 lac) & GLS (Rs.3.99 lac) have 1193 CC engines that deliver 65ps of power @ 5000rpm & 105nm of torque @ 2500rpm, and give mileage of 12/13 in city & 15/16 on highway.

Looking to your weekly usage/run, you do not require spending more on a Diesel car.  Petrol or LPG (DUO) will suit your requirements better.  WagonR is a tall car & therefore will be more comfortable for your height (6.3). CS is, however, more spacious & comfortable and has better ride quality than WagonR. Running cost of CS Diesel & DUO would be more or less same. If you consider CS Petrol – it will give little less mileage than WagonR Petrol.

Regarding Diesel cars, engines are these days virtually as good as petrol engines from maintenance & service cost point of view.  Diesel cars are sturdier, stronger and have better longevity and resale value.

Maruti service & network is better than Tata’s.  Tata have, however, improved considerably and there is absolutely no problem in going for Tata cars.

For your usage, plainly rule out diesel and LPG as well - the usage is too low to justify alternate fuels.

My recommendation is WagonR petrol only - why pay extra for a DUO when the usage is low to recover the money back??

If your usage is increasing over a period of time, then you can get an LPG kit retrofitted later after may be couple of years of usage on petrol.

Yes, that's better - go for WagonR & for LPG retrofittment later, if required.

Hi Pankaj & Prasad,

Wow, Thank you very much....this is awesome and really helpful

I have one more questions here, I heard this from many of my friends/relatives that if we wont use the Diesel CAR for more than 3-4 Days then there will be some problem with Engine, how was is that true?

On a lighter note if i go for Indigo CS-Diesel/Petrol, will i land up in some trouble in later point of time? I am thinking like if i go for this then it will give a rich look (as it considered to be Sedan) when compared with WagonR ;)

Last question is which has better re-sale value? Indigo or WagonR?

Thanks for ur help.

It seems you are more inclined in buying a Diesel car, though your run (considerably less) doesn't justify.  Anyway, if you can spend more for a diesel engine, there's nothing wrong - many people do so.

What you have heard from your friends/relatives is a history now - Diesel engines are quite refined these days & there is absolutely no problem if you use it once a week or so.

If you buy CS, I see no trouble for you - whatsoever.  It is basically a compact Indigo - no change otherwise.

Resale value of both Tata & Maruti cars are better as compared to other cars in its segment - but it all depends upon the maintenance & conditioin of the car and market scenario at the material time.  As such, like I have said before, Diesel cars being stronger, sturdier & having better longevity, generally have better resale value then Petrol cars.

Agree with Pankaj, resale wise both of them are going to fetch you pretty much similar monies. Having said that, the Indigo CS v/s WagonR, I will go with the WagonR as it has better performance for the size of the car.

Indigo CS is a very competent car and on the current day standards, I don't think that it is anywhere substandard to the WagonR. The only issue is with the petrol versions of it - Tatas still need to take that final leap in the Quality of their petrol engines - not that they are bad - just that they are not as refined as the ones on Marutis or the Hyundais.

If you are going for a diesel Indigo, well, I can certainly tell you that the economics of the diesel car don't suit your case as for your usage, petrol car is best suited - while diesel technology has come leaps and bounds, petrol still performs more refined when compared to a diesel car - this is especially for city conditions where a petrol car can zip through easily under traffic conditions.

K Prasad
