Must say.. i am about to take a decision.. and had to literraly hunt for peopel who had a good word about the safari.. so let me ask you some of the obvious problems i heard about this "TATA CAR"

- hows been the service record and the problems, tough only a year i assume you haev not faced any..!!

- does the quality of the Body of the jeep a problem - as compared to scorpio.

- scorpio now comes with Mhawk engine..(all variants) how do you feel about that aas compared to the new safari.

I've had one for over 4 years now so perhaps I can comment too:

-hows been the service record and the problems

There are issues, but these are mostly minor and have NEVER left me with an unusable vehicle.  Most of the issues with the Safari are peripheral and not critical.

- does the quality of the Body of the jeep a problem - as compared to scorpio.

If you're asking about build quality, let me assure you this vehicle can take a whole lot of serious abuse.  The problems are with FIT and not with build as such.  The only recurring 'rattle' issue I have had is with the tailgate - I've had it fixed about 4 times so far (4.5 years, 80k kms).  I understand this has been fixed for good in the latest 2.2s, with an improved sub-frame inside the tailgate that is able to take the weight of the very heavy spare wheel and tyre better.

- scorpio now comes with Mhawk engine..(all variants) how do you feel about that aas compared to the new safari.

The Scorpio now comes with the 120bhp mHawk engine.  The Safari has been coming with the 140 bhp 2.2 VTT engine for nearly two years now.  Both torque and peak output (BHP) figures are way higher in the Safari.  If you must compare with an mHawk engine, the 2.2 in the Sumo Grande is a suitable comparison.

- Comfort  >  Safari, but please note seating is limited to 5 plus 2 very small kids.  The Scorpio has a 7-seater option even if it isnt the most comfortable last row.  So if your priority is seating for more, you should go for the Scorpio.

- Interior Space > Safari, by quite a margin

- Performance > Safari

- Features > Depends on the variant and on your budget.  Both have feature-rich versions at different price points.

- Mileage > Safari

- Road handling > Safari, without any doubt.  Just take a sweeping curve really fast in a Scorpio and try to get it straightened out after the curve, you will know

Well I beleive the same. TATA Sumo is a Taxi car only. Never the less I am also planning to buy either Safari and Scorpio. let me put some more VALID choices here. what about Xylo. I am not sure about it. does it stands anywhere in front of Scorpio or Safari. I know it is not SUV. but still Can we atleast compare.  I also overheard that TATA is going to launch a new version of Safari.

Scorpio vs Safari an Honest Comparison:

Off roading: The thing which sperates SUV from puny cars ,Here is Scorpio is definitely more tougher and stronger than Safari.

Looks: Although looks are subjective and I own a Scorpio myself , I still think Safari is more classy and Scorpio is more sporty but really both look really muscular and cool.

Mileage and Maintenance: The main negative point of Safari , With niggles every weak and an average as good as a 20 lakh Fortuner ,keeps your pocket very honest.

Power and Acceleration: Although Safari is powerful but Scorpio is a beast when it comes to power and pick up.

Comfort: Both are comfortable only in first two rows but yes Safari is more comfortable on highways and long drives , Scorpio is much better for city driving and if you are looking for a long drive than you would be better of driving around 90-100km/hr (not more than that ) to feel safe and comfy.

After Sales Service: Tata fails miserably here ,although Mahindra can also improve but it is still much better than the careless attitude (chalta hai ) of Tata.

Resale value (The silent Killer) : Here because of the huge amount of sales of scorpio and demand increasing everyday. The scorpio has a much better resale value than safari. Since Tata cars specially Safari have niggles every week or so when they get old thats why Safari's resale value is not that good as it should be.

Theft: As most of you know after Maruti 800 and Alto ,Scorpio is the most stolen car in India because of its huge demand and a tremendous resale value. I have myself added the top model of autocop and the gear lock and also a steering lock just to keep my scorpio safe.Safari is comparatively less prone to theft.

Insurance: Although this point is kind of not appropriate but since I am an Insurance Consultant myself and own a scorpio therefore I would like to give my personal experience with different insurance companies . Scorpio is declined in most insurance companies because the risk of theft is high(it has a high risk of being stolen) and thats why Discounts are less as compared to Safari and the premiuim is high.

Safety: The one thing scary about Scorpio is its Control over speeds of 100 km/hr ,Although Safari is also not that safe but it is still better than Scorpio in this department.

This is just my humble opinion ,I would like to hear what you all have to say.

I am fully thrilled to read all these reviews. I did a comparison of both these beasts last year when my brother in law was interested in buying SUV. All the salient points that I had in my mind are already mentioned in this thread. However, when it comes to safety - i would like to re-emphasis that Scorpio is not that safe when compared to Safari at high speed (especially above 120 KMPH). It requires lot of courage to jam the brake @ 120 KMPH in Scorpio to bring it to a complete halt.

Having said this, it all depends on individuals perception. We all decided and bought Scorpio for its instant pick-up, muscular look, short turning radius and many other features like ABS, cruise control, micro hybrid technology etc at a price tag lesser than Safari.

IMHO, both Safari and Scorpio are good SUVs. It is upto an individual to choose depending upon the budget, usage, family size etc.

Hello Friends,

What if we compare Xylo (good look), Safari (grand look) and Innova (reliability)?..I personally feel, Scorpio should not be compard with the above series...May be mahindra released Xylo to qualify for this series!!!!

Which one will be a best fit in terms of value for money?...Somehow Safari look pleased me from last 10 years, but was not having enough money to buy...However, when i am trying to buy now, i should buy the best "Value for money"

Can anybody listout the maintanance issue in Safari?..I use 30% city drive (Bangalore) and 50% highway drive and 20% on rough roads (Village roads). Let maintanance issue be there, it should not lead to stoppage of journey (like engine problems).

Its not proper to compare Safari with Xylo and Innova or vice-versa. Safari is an SUV while others are MUV. Further, read my earlier posts. I feel all the cars have their own pros and cons. You need to decide which is having more pros for you as an individual and that fits best your requirement.

Safari has improved a lot over last decade. I am using it for last 2+ years and driven 55k+ . I would define it as VFM in terms of SUV. However, Innova has better fuel efficiency in all the lots of SUV and MUV. The new safari really holds all the aspects of a VFM SUV. I just feel that ABS and Air bags should be default across all variants.

No major maintanance issues so far. Get the service done on regular interval as mentioned in the User Manual. Seeing that you would drive 50% on highway and 20% on rough roads... 30% of city driving in Safari should not be a problem. Comparing to Innova and Xylo (as requested), they both are fine for city driving, Innova good for highway driving but not for rough roads. Safari is fine in all 3 aspects, however for city, you just need to get used to it.

If you buy a Scorpio..you have made a wise choice...if you buy a Safari...you have made a great choice Tongue out

Even I've been thinking hard between Safari / Scorpio / Xylo. But somewhere deep inside, I was inclined to Safari (may be, just for the sheer looks; I don't have much idea about vehicles) and was hoping someone knowledgeable would agree with me. And now I'm very happy to see your detail analysis / comparison between both.

BTW, would throw some light on the newr version of Safari to be released in 2011. Hoping that TATA guys are reading our discussions and taking note of all the points to improve further.

One more question:- You're driving mostly in Bangalore; what mileage do you get? And which particular model do you have? BTW, I'm also in Bangalore and on an average, drive 30KMs a day.
