Yes.. to be more specific, they are 3 box car.

3 box means - 3 different compartment, i.e Engine compartment , Passenger compartment & Luggage compartment. All these 3 compartments are divided.

Some say Sedan , some say Saloon & some Notchback.. But they all mean it same, all are 3 box in shape..

Actually all these classification like HATCHBACK, SEDAN, SALOON etc they all are classifications of shape.

Notchback is a term used for a "3-box" car or as more commonly known, a sedan (US) / saloon (UK). It is used to define a car which has a clear 3-box design - the engine compartment being the 1st box, the passenger compartment being the 2nd box and the luggage compartment being the 3rd box. Notchback is characterised by a near-vertical drop-off from a car's roof to its boot, like the many sedans that you see on our roads.

However, there is another type of sedan which is know as a Fastback. This type of sedan has a roofline that slopes continuously down at the back - like the Mercedes-Benz CLS. Coupes can also be included in this category as well as some hatchbacks, but not all hatchbacks are fastbacks and vice versa.

Another body style is the Liftback. Good examples of this are Skoda's Octavia and the new Superb. A Liftback is a car in which the tailgate extends up to the higher end of the C-pillar and includes the rear window.

Great Additions Mr. Anand..

Its great to improve the knowledge bank..

By the way, LIFTBACK in indian term can also be specified as SEMI NOTCHBACK, where the rear windshield can also be lifted along with the boot door..

For e.g - Skoda Octavia, Accent Viva etc

It has to do with the size of the car like small and hatchbacks match A segment. Check out "car segment" in the web, you'll find a great amount of info.

The new Skoda Superb will be classified as a "Liftback-Notchback" I guess, because it is both!

Hi,

I am having Swift Vxi and in the Registration Card, the body type written is Saloon.

After reading the posts, I am confused what exactly is Saloon then.

Dear all,

As intro of myself, I would like to tell in very short that I am an Automobile Engineer and owning a community at ORKUT.

As many of you have posted here regarding car terminology and most of them are very correct, I would like summarize it as following:

  1. Hatch Back: Car without extended boot (M-800, Santro, i-10, 1-20, Swift etc)
  2. Notch Back: Car with an extended boot cpmpartment (Swift Dezire, City, SX4, Fiesta etc)
  3. Saloon: It's a terminology which is further classified in two types for cars
    1. 2-Door Saloon(Cars with 2 doors only, boot lid is not included in this. eg 2 door Ferrari)
    2. 4-Door Saloon (Cars with four doors again boot lid is not included in this. Generally manufacturers are using this "4-door saloon " fr their premium models)
  4. MUV: Multi utility vehicle (Toyota Innova, Sumo etc)
  5. SUV: Sports Utility Vehicle (Honda-CRV, Ford Endevor, Scorpio, Tata Safari)

MODs' Remark:  Please do NOT mention your contact details or the webpage etc. you may otherwise be associated with (info so posted is since removed).
