Hi

What are the registration charges for a car in Bangalore for lets say a Honda City GXi. The dealer is qutoing some Rs. 95000/- for the same.

Is it better to get the Registration and Insurance done from the dealer itself or do it on your own?

Aashish

Hi Aashish,

I think the amount 95000 looks ok. You could actually check the same using Carwale.com's tool to find the on-road price for any car. Try http://www.carwale.com/new/Purchase.aspx?version=526

You could actually get it done yourself too. Most of the delares charge an extra 5000 as handling charges, which i assume goes towards same. Considering most of the RTO offices in Bangalore would have documentation in Kannada and also it would take time to coordinate the entire effort. So getting it done from the dealer itself would be a better option. But you could definitely get it done yourself too. And against the popular opinion i found the people at one of the RTO office very friendly.

Thanks for the same. Just wanted to check whether these high registration rates are applicable in other states as well. For example rates in Punjab is a mere 20000/- as against 90 K in Karnataka.

Registration Charges & RTO rules differ from state to state.

Unfortunately, Karnataka is the state with highest road-tax in country. It ranges from 10%-15%. Other sounthern states have 9% road-tax. Maharashtra, Gujarat have 7%, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh have 4-5% road-tax. Bihar, Haryana and Punjab have road-tax from mere Rs.3,500 to 3% of vehicle cost.

Thanks for the nice info.  By the way, in Gujarat it's 6% on petrol cars & 7.5% on diesel cars.

Are you sure, Pankaj? I've heard it's 6% flat. However for CBUs (imported cars), it's 12%? Can you please re-confirm from your source for me?

I'm sorry for the error - actually it's a recent change, and was, therefore, not aware of it.  Hats-off to you for having such latest info.

Anyway, thanks Banwari for asking me to re-confirm.  That 6% for petrol & 7.5% for diesel has since been (recently) revised to 6% flat (for petrol & diesel both).  Besides, for imported cars, it is 12%.

These are for private cars.  If the same are registered in the name of a company/organisation, it becomes double; 12 % & 24% respectively.

Incidentally, octorio charges have since been abolished from Gujarat since 15/11/2007 (don't have to pay octorio for new cars/vehicles).

No issues, Pankaj.

I was more worried than confident as it was my own research's part.

Thanks for re-confirming.

I feel very bad for passing wrong/outdated information.  Actually I myself have paid 7.5% for my Indica Diesel (June 2006).  But till recently it was so, so it didn't occur to me that I should re-confirm it.  Anyway, this incident will make me more cautious in future.  Thanks & Cheers.
