On-road price of Honda CR-V 2007 (2.0 2WD) in Calicut is Rs.18.79 lac & in Bangalore Rs.20.42 lac - a difference of Rs.1.63 lac.  Ex-show room price is same (Rs.17.20 lac) at both places but at Bangalore RTO is 1.62 lac more & Insurance Rs.0.01 lac.

In the given situation, you should buy & register your car at Calicut.  As such, it is also logical because you reside there.  Regarding using it in Bangalore as well, there is no harm - you can always provide evidence that you reside at Calicut & visit Bangalore frequently for office work.  There isn't restriction on using private cars in other cities/states.

You are welcome, Edwin.  After buying Honda CRV, please share your experience on CarWale. Thanks.

Edwin,

As Pankaj said, it really makes sense to register a car in city of your residence. It's cent-pecent legal too. As far as difference is concerned, Karnataka charges the most road-tax in the country.

Two-wheeler experience is much different than that of a car. Even in Bombay, sometimes it seems that riding a bike is utter crime. People riding bicycles are more respected.

Please read this on a lighter note (

Looks like i should be shifting to some other state and then only buy a new car. Being in Bangalore to pay highest road tax, end up getting a raw road deal and finally getting to crib at every available opportunity!!

And fully agreed on the bicycle part. I think i would be buying one soon. Advantages:

  • No fuel expense (except water/juice for rehydration)
  • Extremely minimal maintenance charges
  • No time lost in traffic jams
  • No problem finding parking place
  • Eco friendly with no emissions
  • Inexpensive ownership experience
  • Unlimited modifications possible
  • 24x7 free AC availability (no climate control though ( )
  • Could be converted to a 4 seater if 2 bicycles coul dbe put together

This would no doubt be the next generation vehicle. One which appeals to everyone (on health reasons too!!). Cheapest & most efficient Mass/peoples vehicle.

Hey guys.. This was the only thread I found in all my search efforts with rto tax information.. Helped big time..

I wonder if it would be possible for everyone to contribute the registration charges for their states here so it would be a one-stop referral for anyone wondering what the various charges are..

I work for Volvo Cars, Pune (Planet Exklusiv). We cover Maharashtra and Goa (except Mumbai) but also deliver to Gujarat and MP.

Maharashtra regn charges are as follows:

Passenger car upto 10 lakhs: 7%

Passenger car  10-20 lakhs: 8%

Passenger car above 20 lakhs:9%

Company/Corporate regn: Usually 2x (confirmation needed)

CBU import: 2x above rates, no diff individual/co regn. (Volvo S80 and XC90 have 18% RTO in Pune, 16% in Kolhapur.)

Octroi: 4% in Pune. 2% Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Goa: 6% for individuals / 14% for corporate regn + 12.5% entry tax if no dealer within state.

Be the change you want to see.
