I have purcahsed a Maruti Esteem VX 1998. The car has following problems:

1. One of the cylinder in engine has an adapter - Mechanic is suggesting to go for complete engine overhauling (cost 25000/-)

2. Power windows get stuck often - Mechanic is suggesting that due to vigrous use, the motors bush has gone and either change to manual (cost 1000/- per window) or new motor (7500/- per window).

I would like to know your views whether I should invest money in this car or sell it (mechanic's guess: 90000/-). I have shown it to 3-4 mechanics and all are suggesting to go for engine overhauling and they say it will be a good value for money after that.

Secondly, if I go for engine overhauling, should I get it done from local mechanic or authorised dealer.

It is wise to sell this off instead of investing 90,000 on this. Because there is no gurantee that the car would be smoother and good in performance upto the mark.

Happy Driving.

I have a similar car 1997 Esteem VX

I just went ahead and got it fit with an LPG kit, is the problem occouring due to the same?

Look as it is this car is very old why not take the best of price comming accross. Other vehicals are comming on road at much competitive price range.

Or else does the 25K that you would spend guarantee a no maintenance order from the mechanic

Well try this out.

regarding the power windows.... it's quite normal considering the model of the car...maybe you ask the mechanic to do a little bit of oiling... it helps a bit.

Overhauling & repairing/replacement of Power Windows will cost you a total of 33K.  As the vehicle is 10 years old & has already done 75K kms, I doubt if it would be good value for money.

I personally feel it would be more prudent to sell-off the car in Rs.90K or so - it would virtually mean 90K + 33K you save on the expenditure, i.e. a total of Rs.123K.  Just pocket that & go for some new car of your choice.  You could also consider some good 2nd hand car in the range of 200K to 250K, if you do not wish to spend more for the time being.

It would be better to show it your Maruti dealer and ask him the Aprox Amount of repair and also ask the other dealer or your local Well kknown Garage  and then see who is best and Whose Quotation is good and then Decide

cheers

In my opinion all dealers quote higher than local garage, for repairs etc. You should, however, check with the dealer, as suggested by Sri, and decide thereafter.  I suggest you also check the resale value of the car with them.

In any case, I would recommend don't go for overhauling & repairing - sell it & go for a new car / 2nd hand good car.
