Let me provide some balance to this rather one-sided debate.
I own an old Santro LS ZipDrive (1-lit, 2000 model). It has now done 124000 kms. Engine overhaul was done at 123000 kms. Clutch lasts approx 60000 kms for me. Car is now almost as good as new, not a single rattle after 10 years. Car has been driven hard at high speeds and high revs, sometimes exceeding 100 kmph in 3rd gear and 150 kmph in 4th. Engine has stood up to this abuse brilliantly and now feels very good after overhaul (not yet tested at high speed). Highway mileage with speeds in the range of 80-100 kmph and with AC off is about 17 kim/lit. Xing should give better mileage than my model.
Hyundai customer service has been exceptionally good. Even though my model is out of production for 9 years now, Hyundai has gotten all the spares for me (many times ordering them from Chennai).
Santro has a hydraulic power steering (HPS) . It lasts about 60000 kms before requiring maintenance. The HPS of Santro is one of the best, and gives the car extremely precise handling, especially at high speeds (140+ kmph). I have driven the EPS-equipped Swift Dzire Vxi at speeds of upto 175 kmph, but I can vouch for the fact that my Santro's HPS has a much better feel and precision. However, it is true that the HPS is older techology, is heavier (thus reducing performance/fuel economy marginally) and requires more maintenance. Wagon R's EPS will make city driving marginally easier, but on the highway the Santro's HPS will win (in my opinion, and based on my experience on the Mumbai-Pune route.
