And ofcourse in my car too where I got some good lessons about speakers from Rohit.

Speaking of which I am planning to do something with my car's speakers. The ones in use now are almost choking for breath - literally! The 6x9's that I have are coaxials (and I prefer these to dual-cones) but they have a very serious downside: Because of the way they are usually mounted (facing up) dust - and even small leaves - enter the centre of the speaker (being coaxial, it does not have a dust cap), and over time this simply jams the diaphragm (cone) from moving freely resulting in loss of bass and basically a phata hua sound. The ones in my car have choked to the point of becoming useless.

I don't know how many know this (probably because I never mentioned it) but audio is my first hobby (have made several speakers/amps for home use) and I plan to put those skills to car use. Let's see how successful I get in this. Wish me luck.

Wow Rohit, Great to know your audio skills.

I love listening to music, but unfortunately can't sort out all this co-axial, dual-cone, component, etc. I mostly listen to classical (hindustani and carnatic) and old hindi film music (mostly Rafi Lata). Let me know how I can improve the audio experience in my car.

Mods: If the above query is seriously OT, then sorry. Please delete the post.

Problem with car audio is noise - road noise, engine noise, ambient noise, etc. At low to moderate volumes the HU+speaker combo is sufficient for the sedate listener but still very much affected by noise.

To have a system which can both sound clear and louder than all this noise (or if you are the kind who makes others hear what you are hearing) is a very demanding goal and most HU+speaker sytems fall seriously short of this: By the time they are loud enough to drown the noise or audible to others, they themselves become sources of noise!

So basically if you want home hi-fi like sound from a car system then you are into component-sub-amp territory. It still isn't hi-fi in the true sense of the word but better than what the HU+speaker combo can give.

I cannot suggest brands but what you need at a minimum are 2x component speakers with 2 channel amplifier.

For a bit more "advanced" system, you need 4x component speakers with a 4 channel amp

For car shattering bass add a sub (and its own amp) into either of the above.

In all cases wiring has to be robust and at the same time not impact any of the car's existing electricals.

hmm.. nice piece of information. While I am absolutely fine with my stock music system - alpine with 4 speakers and 2 twitters (pls dont ask me details) this information is definitely going to help if anything I want to change.

To tell you the truth, since Rohit suggested few things that day, am seriously thinking about my music system - making it better. Mind it, not change but make it better. Thanks Rohit. Get ready for more trouble

Its "tweeters"... twitters are different - they tweet on a certain social networking site.

One more problem with vehicles is space. Bigger speakers = better sound (i.e. bass). So everything else being the same (stock HU and nothing else), simply replacing all speakers with bigger diameter ones will do wonders for the sound. Unfortunately this is where the trouble begins: It might not be practical or even possible to fix the speakers at places from where they will sound best. For example, the dashboard or the doors are the best places in order of priority, but both place an upper limit to speaker size. The rear can take much larger speakers but then for them to sound loud enough at the driving position, you need to set fader towards the rear - you end up with something much like a rickshaw. And if you do set fader to rear, passengers in the back will shout the moment you want even a decent or normal sound level at the driver or front position! There lies the rub.
