Maximum time its just the matter of getting used to it. One serious advise I would like to give, especially in traffic is, "till you are able to see the wheel of your front vehicle (car, bus, 2-wheeler), you are at safe distance". If you follow this rule, am sure you would be more confident and would slowly get a feel or idea of the actual length or end of the car.

In parking lots, one way which I used to try is to bring ON, the warning lights (all four side indicators together) and try judge the gaps between car and walls or pillars by the amount of light falling on them. I have been able to succeed till date in these two ways. Hope it helps you too. Anyone have better options, please do suggest.
