Contrary to intuition, tyre pressure 1-2 PSI above recommended does no harm and might actually help with handling and safety...though the ride will be a bit harsher. The reason for this is due to higher pressure, there is less side-wall flex and hence better cornering (less body roll while turning at speed) ability. Also less sidewall flex means that the tyre also suffers less fatigue. Higher pressure also reduces the tyres' rolling resistance which means better mileage.
For new tyres perhaps the fatigue part does not apply much, but better handling means greater safety. I have been inflating my really old santro's tyres (which all have developed fine hairline cracks on the sides) to 32-34 PSI (30 PSI is the recommended) for the last 1-1/2 years or so and till date no problems (except for the harsher ride).
