 Dear Friends,

I am looking for a new car with details as follows

1.Price range - Rs 5.5-6.5 lacs ( on road price ex-Mumbai)
2.Monthly running - 300KM on highway and 200KM in city.
3.Purpose - family car
4.Important criteria - Fuel economy, comfort, luxury, low maintainance and of course safety.

I have chosen TATA Indigo XL classic petrol model.I have followin querries

1.Is my selection correct given my requirements?
2.If not, can you suggest any other car?
3.I have a concern about Petrol car from TATA since I am told that one has to buy only diesel car from TATA due to their expertise in diesel engine technology. Please give me you feedback in this regard.
4.Given my monthly running, is Diesel car worth the consideration?
5.If yes then which car do you recommend in the same price range.
6.Most importantly your feedback on overall peformance of XL classic petrol car.I haven't seen much of this car on roads and hence bit undecided about going for it.
7.Tips for buying car and negotiation with dealer.Any news about discount being offered on XL car?My payment would be direct with no loan. Can you tell me best on-road price (ex-Mumbai) for this car?
8.Check-list for inspection while taking delivery of car.

I shall await your feedback.

Thanks and regards

have you tried chevorlet aveo,if not please try that out or else please try out logan.as far as indigo xl classic goes TATA has increased the length by 200 mm (gives to leg space but width is same and its a tight fit for three normal people in rear seat) and the engine remains saqme so the performance is ? the interiors are not bnot that classy if you compare with aveo. the features like tray behind seats is a gimmick (i think rarely someone would use that while driving) and rear AC console is also only an add on. as far econmy goes it would give you around 10-11 in city and 14 -15 in city.seeing your monthly running ,it is strongly recommended that you buy petrol version only.

Sunil,

Let us take it step by step:
 1. Indigo XL is  decent car but I reckon it will be a bit over 6.5. It is very spacious and has good comfort levels. If you are looking for a sedan, then surely go for it.
2. If you are flexible enough to consider other cars, we'd suggest you look at cars like the Chevrolet UV-A and the Hyundai Getz Prime 1.3. Both the cars will deliver a little better mileage than the Indigo XL and with the price bracket you have, you can get a loaded version of either of them. Having ABS and airbags is always a good thing!
3. The petrol engine is just fine. It is a misconception that Tata makes only good diesel engnines. It is all about caring for the car and keeping it in a good shape. Thats it. Just get the regular check-ups done and the engine shall deliver fine.
4&5. No, considering your kind of running, a diesel will not make sense.
6. As I said in the first point, performance is not bad. It is no street-racer, but then, I think, you really do not need such a car! It is good for doing usual business. Has loads of space and good ride quality. So overall good comfort.
7. You can negotiate on the rate of interest which, at times, can be brought down to as low as 9.5% (considering rates as of today). Also, do check out this to get the on-road price of any car you want to.
8. Check the odometer reading first. If it shows a lot of kilometers on it, talk to the dealership guys for the reason, because a new car should not have a lot of kays on its odo (~25-40 max). If you think they are being diffident about answering you, the car was at the dealership for test drives etc. Stay clear.
Check the fluid levels after this. Pop the hood, check the coolant and the brake oil level. Check washer fluid. Inspect car for dents. Check upholstery for stains etc. Turn the engine on and check for noises.

Hope it helps.
Cheers!

Dear Ashish,

Thanks for patiently replying to my so many questions. In fact based on your feedback I am going ahead and booking the XL tomorrow itself.I find XL to be a good value for money.

You seem to be very knowledgeable on moving machines and cars appear to be your passion.

Have you driven XL yourself?

Thanks a lot once again.

Bye

Sunil

Dear Ashish,

I have to inform you that I have booked Indigo XL classic petrol version.I want to know if the comprehensive insurance policy from Reliance being offered by the dealer is good enough.I think comprehensive policy is better than only third party insurance. Please confirm. What is the exact meaning of cashless insurance?

Bye

Third-party Insurance is necessary as per Govt. laws. Comprehensive Insurance insures your car (as well as passengers, if opted for) against any damager/theft. Comprehensive Insurance is many-folds better than Third-party Insurance.

All insurance companies offer more or less same features/terms-conditions. Their claim processes are equally good/bad. Get the insurance done from any insurer.

Cash-less Insurance means you don't need to pay anything in case of accident. The insurance company will take care of all the repairs. The term is quite subjective and comes with many terms and conditions. In nutshell, no insurance company is offering 100% cash-less insurance as of now.

Dear all,

I got the delivery of the Indigo car and have started driving on the road.

Car is really very good and spacious too.My entire family has liked the car very much.It is really VFM.

I used to drive Fiat car 5 years ago and then stopped.I found difference w.r.t gears.i.e.hand vs. floor gears.I want to know the exact procedure of gear shifting. While I am able to go from1st -2nd-3rd-4th gear,I am unable to go to 5th gear.Reverse is still difficult and sometimes due to gear going into 2nd directly from 5th, the engine gets stalled.

Can you guide me please or give me tips on how to do it.I feel that with practice I may overcome this problem. However your guidance will help me.

Bye

Sunil

Sunil,

Congratulations for the delivery of the car.

As for the gear shifting problem, there is no particularly expert tip that would help you get accustomed to the floor mounted shift-gate. I would just like to say that keep practicing the gear change and only then you will become better. Just one bit - when you shift into 2nd from 1st, do not allow the gear lever to fall into neutral. Just keep the gear shift as seamless as possible. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd, allow to the lever to fall into the neutral position on its own and once it is there, instantly shift into 3rd by simply pushing the shift lever forward, Shift straight down for 4th and when shifting to 5th, force the arm and the lever to the right and move the lever forward. This should make the gear engage 5th. Try it and let us know! But as I said again, there in no expert way... you just have to get used to it. And you will.
