The work depends upon the amount of damage that has occurred. If the bumper is cut or torn, it will have to be replaced for a genuine look. Else, if it is just a dent, it can be easily removed. If you can, do post pictures so that we can know the damage better. As there seems to be some problem with carwale images, you can upload them in any place and paste it here.

You can buy the black bumper and get it painted locally. But it is difficult to achieve the original quality you had previously had got. Unless you approach a professional workshop, there will be a difference in the shade and overall finish. Is replacement really necessary?

In good old days bumper was for protecting the car, thus saving money during mild accidents. Now I think bumper is the culprit; it costs more than repairing and painting the metal!

Most bumpers absorb impact at low speeds. That is, they get deformed and come back to shape in some time, leaving some amount of scratches. Modern bumpers are more focussed towards pedestrain safety and low-impact force absorption rather than protecting the car.

I see. That makes sense since a bad injury to pedestrain (like broken leg) can create more problems for us. A black bumper (no paint) will cost much less. But the bumpers have become so big nowadays and it no longer looks good unless it is body color.

One reason why I dont complain about soft bumpers is that a broken bumper is always easy to fix rather than a strong bumper which transfers the force to other parts, thus damaging or even transferring the force to the occupants, which is not desired

Dont claim insurance. You can upload the images to flickR, picasa etc and share it here. Though you will get a complete reimbursement, you still have to pay oricessing charges or claim charges. Is it so serious to really replace the bumper?
