I think that the practice is done in order to cool the engine down before shutting it down. But, the difference in engine temperature we find here is very less, ie the engine may cool only to a little extent, as the radiator fan is a secondary device and it switches on only when the car is not moving, and when the coolant temperature has increased above a margin.
Are you sure Sankalp that the fan does not start when the car is in motion? IMO it has nothing to do with the car's motion per se, but relative motion between the radiator and air - It simply depends on the air-flow across the radiator and the temperature of the air - on a sufficiently hot day there is no reason why the ECU should not start the radiator fan (or simply put, radiator fan should not start) while the car is in motion. Similarly, on a sufficiently cold day the radiator fan may not start for longer periods even if the car is not moving: The colder ambient air will cool the radiator more efficiently without having much relative motion.

Depends upon car and manufacturer. In sx4, the fan cuts off as soon as the car starts moving. Again it depends upon coolant temperature.

Slightly off topic but since we are discussing , in my Palio If I drive without A/c, fan rearly comes in to action in traffic & my temp needle shows 1/2 way or above mark. But with A/c on Fan operats consistently & temp settles at 1/4 mark.

Satish, there may or may not be a problem. I have seen an Indica (diesel) where temp gauge is never at one point - it changes based on load conditions. In my santro (and usually most petrol cars) the needle usually stays in the same position - just below the half-way mark. And rarely goes above that mark. An odd occurence of the needle going above half mark is probably normal, but if it happens regularly then there may be a problem. Usually a very clogged/dirty radiator or condensor coil is the reason since either will hamper air flow (and hence heat exchange between the radiator and the air). Another cause is a weak radiator fan (which can be due to the fan motor itself or some loose connection/wiring), which causes the fan to run slow or intermittently - though in your case I doubt if this is the problem.

@Satish - Where is the A/C condenser in Palio? Does it have a fan to cool it?
