For the speedo needle, you need to remove the instrument cluster from the car, open it to gain access to the needle mechanism and clean/lube it. I am not aware of the availability of back-lit speedos, however.

They usually say that gear oil is for life - until the gear oil gets dirty enough to cause problems in the gearbox! Get it changed irrespective of what the mechanic says - if mechanic does not want to do it, look for another who will. Again, refer to the user manual for the exact type/rating of oil to be used. Usually for front-wheel drive cars, there is only one oil required for both the gearbox & differential (collectively called transaxle) and the oil is referred to as transaxle oil. Rs. 1000 sound too much - and synthetic/ordinary does not make much difference except for price. IMO get the transaxle oil recommended in the user manual and have it changed by the local mechanic instead of service centre - it will cost much less.

Water seepage/rust can be done by somewone who does body work - most garages do.

Rohit,

When the problem started, the idle speed was like going up and down(was not uniform). Also engine stops and starts while driving in average speed. The mechanic told it as a Throttle position sensor problem and need to change. As I mentioned in the previous discussion, I visited another mechanic and he shown me the spark plug working. I was convinced with that and changed de spark plugs. The problem solved after that. Now the idle speed is going in a smooth way.... no ups and down in idle speed.

is TPS and IAC same. What would be cost of changing these modules if required.

TPS and IAC are different but related. TPS is used by ECU to sense how much the accelerator is pressed and IAC is used to control the idle RPM. It is also used by the ECU to determine when to activate the IAC - to basically make the engine idle at the correct RPM. Problems in TPS usually surface as irregular acceleration and/or rough idling or sudden surge in acceleration, while IAC problems typically surface in the form of irregular idle RPM and occasional engine stalling when you take foot off the accelerator.

I don't know about Ikon, but for santro the TPS costs some 800 bucks and the IAC would be around 1500...

Hi Everyone,

I'm back looking for another advice, if any one could offer - My ford IKON (1.3 Endura Petrol, Dec'02) has developed some vibration problem! The engine sound too seems a little changed while idling, somewhat rough I should say! I clearly there was no vibration at all earlier - used to be Absolutely smooth & quiet.

My mechanics have checked-up & haven't found anythinh wrong, the only thing they are able to guess is about Engine mounts - just a guess! Can the Engine mounts suddenly cause vibrations & change engine sound.

I had got it's Spark plugs, Coil & oils replaced recently & it appears it has started thereafter - the coild was original Motocraft but was arranged from outside - could it be a weaker coil & if it could be giving the problem.

I welcome your advice / tips etc.

regards

Naveen
