Welcome to carwale.

No you cannot sell the car and the number seperately. They go together.

I guess this is possible, you can aution your registration number at RTO as long as you are selling/scraping your car. Check with your RTO about this.

Not sure what you intend to say here? Is it like he sells back the number to the RTO and sell the car without a registration number? AFAIK the registration number for a car cannot be changed unless the state changes.

That happens when a particular number is not alloctaed to any vehicle. For that the RTO auctions the number just like Pankaj has got it. However once the number is allocated to a car it cannot be given to another vehicle. If that was possible then people would like to retain their numbers while selling their cars and going for new ones.

No offense meant but better to mention things you are sure of to a certain extent. 'I Think' is a very dangerous word to use in such situations. If you know of any situation or persoon who has done this do post the details so that all of us benefit from it.

I had picked up this nbr for 1.5 lacs. I don't need it any longer. What's the best way to recover my investment..if there's a way?

You cannot call it as an investment. Its just a one time payment with no returns (in most cases). However you might want to advertise your car saying you have a VIP number and get some premium for that. If anyone is interested they will cone for it. I am sure if there is a possibility like what AK has mentioned but if there is you might want to check that too.

Learning is always welcome my friend but not at the expense of someone else. The reason why I say this is Pankaj is wanting to know the solution to his problem which be beneficial only if we suggest something kind of concrete. That is the reason I asked if you know of any specific example or the process to do this.

@Pankaj - just one more thing which just came to my mind. I would suggest you check with a local agent on this. They should also be in a position to tell you if you can sell the number and car seperately.
