Hard steering can be an indicator to an underlying problem. That is, when the wheel recieves a sudden shock, such as running over a hump, or driving into a pothole at a high speed, the wheel gets bent backwards, to say in simple terms.
This is a common case. Though damage will be unnoticeable, repair is difficult and sometimes this cannot be rectified. Again, there is no need to worry as there are multiple linkages between the wheel and the car and some of the parts if damaged can be replaced, while others cant be done easily.
A rough self diagnosis to this is - Keep the steering in straight position. Measure the distance between the wheel and the body either towards the front or the rear. On both sides it must be the same. Or there is something seriously wrong.

Check the above image for reference. The angle made between the slant lie and the perpendicular is the caster.
