Sridhar a dead short across the battery will flatten it but not without first creating ample heat and light. For the kind these mechanics do to check if battery has enough juice it does not matter much - a gentle rub of stranded wire over the battery poles will cause some sparking indicating that the battery has enough charge.

ofcourse Rohit. No disagreements on that. Generally the mechanics just do a slight touch between the terminals and not an actual short. If the terminals are shorted and kept for sometime the battery would get drained is what I intend to say.
