Hi Guys

Please let me know how to get rid of the stains left by the stickers on the body / windshields of the car.

When the car was in Nasik last month for repairs, those guys were so happy to see my car with only one sticker, they applied two more in bold letters. I got so irritated by that one day I tried to remove it, just by using plain water. It actually got messed up and the sticker have left lots of stains on the car body. Please help me get rid of them now. Let me know if I can remove it with Petrol / Diesel.

Dip a cloth in hot water & put it on the affected area for 1-2 mins. Now rub the area with a cloth or you might use the same hot cloth. worked for me.Wink

Removing it with petrol/diesel might leave a stain or weaken the paint from that area. Will advise you to avoid that as your car isn't old.

Thanks Arnv for the fast response. I'll check it out when I go back to Mumbai. I've earlier tried using a soft toothbrush which actually left blackish mark on that portion.Embarassed

Plastic body of toothbrush might have come in contact with the paint leaving blackish mark.Undecided

Moreover toothbrush may even cause scratches.

P.S- For these kind of DIY you should also consult your mum or wife. They know what will work & what might cause harm.Tongue out

Well there are no scratches for sure, as I've used a soft brush with a very 'light' hand. Smile

On the windshields, you can use a plastic scraper to remove the sticker. If there is any stain left you can easily wipe it off with nail-polish remover. For the stickers on the body, peel them off and the remaining glue can be removed by a small amount of oil to elimnate the gummy effect, followed by a shampoo to remove the oily area.

Stickers are best put on glass surfaces rather than the paintwork. If they are put without your consent, peel them as early as you can or make the service center people do the same for you.

Whatever you do, do not apply strong organic solvents (thinner, petrol, diesel, turpentine, kerosene, nail polish remover etc) on the painted parts. Normal oils are not a problem. If you are applying nail polish remover on the windshield, take care so that it does not fall on the painted parts.

Nail polish remover is equivalent to rubbing alchohol and is fine on the paint surface unless you are too harsh with it. Thinner is a solvent and is dangerous on the surface.

Most nail polish removers have acetone as base. Acetone may be weaker than thinner (when it comes to paint) but stronger than alcohol. It is better to avoid it on painted surfaces, eventhough it does not remove paint very easliy (unlike thinner). The following site gives information on acetone.

1. do not use any chemicals.

2. use of hot-water is advisible. however you would really need paitience for this. daily watering and doing a not so hard rubing with a soft piece of cloth ( or may be by a cloth made of fur ) would eventually ( in a weeks time ) would help to remove the adhesive.

3. if you have a shampoo explicitly for Car-wash. then you may wish to use it. but try it first on a small affected area.
