We all missed out a point here. If the radiator fan were to be working fine, then it would be running all the time the engine was at high temperatures, no matter whether on a highway or a traffic jam. The thermostat will trigger the fan as soon as the temperature crosses a point. Surely in any car this can be noticed with a roaring sound(at least a hum even in the best cars ). From what Arup has stated, this is nowhere to be seen or heard of. So Arup, please insist on a proper diagnosis. Remember that the car is under warranty, and you can surely take the dealer to task. Be demanding and do not let them take you for a ride.

@NMP - Thanks, Will check it out asap.

@rohit.b.d. - The first time i found the car over heated, the gauge was already past the red zone. I happened to look at the gauge only when i found the car knocking and making a sort of cranking noise, the engine was still running, though i was standstill in traffic, after which i somehow managed to take the car to the side of the road to park. There was no smoke from the exhaust or bonnet, and there certainly was pick-up problems and I had to muscle the car to the side. The car was bought on 24th July so ample time in warranty left.

@arunD - Yes its under warranty as the car is barely over a month old now. Car is still at the workshop and I have got my Office Commercial Purchases team after Hyundai to change the car/ fit a new engine if possible.

I dont know if they will or this will happen, just sincerely hope that the car i get back doenst give me more such problems guys... disheartened by what has happened.

Yes I am. Got my office team to liase with Modi Hyundai to try and get the engine replaced or the car. Lets see what happens.

Generally I dont think they can afford to antogonize my Company as we perhaps buy over 50 cars a month from them. Fingers crossed.

Reg the noise of the fan, frankly guys, the i20 is super silent and I have never noticed the fan's sound (like how you hear in a palio or ikon) ever. But whenever I had checked during overheating, the fan would start on its own...

It seems that they have received the Engine Head from Hyundai, Korea and are replacing it as we speak.

I hope the problem is solved with this or else its regular trips to the consumer forum for me

Its a good thing that they are replacing the head and head gasket. Ensure that you test the car by yourself and in their prescence for satisifactory performance BEFORE you sign the job sheet. Also, get a report containing the problem, work carried on the car and the cause of the problem from the respected authorities, because, if in the case you find a problem in the future you will have documents to prove the service history. Do not accpet the job without a job card.

Consumer forum is not as lethargic as a court. Some matters do get resolved fast. But hope you need not reach that level

Thanks Pal. Yes I certainly will have a test before taking delivery. And taking your advice, will certainly insist on a report of the problems found, solutions identified, and action taken for future reference. In case the problem is not solved, it will certainly be useful in the consumer forum

My office is liasoning with Hyundai Directors Office for a replacement car, which I think is highly unlikely. Anyways, I hope this problem does not re-occur.

Cheers Mate!

Dear Arun,

Thanks for posting. They have replaced the engine cylinder head and have taken the delivery of the car yesterday.

Today, took the car to work and it is running fine. I hope the problem is solved and I wont have to face such a harrowing time again.

Will keep you guys posted on this

Thanks.

Arup
