Hi guys,

Today i went to Hyundai showroom to check for Huyndai i20 Asta Diesel for my brother. I am surprised to see they have changed their 6 speed manual transmission to 5 speed last month end. But there were no anouncement from Hyundai. They gave big big ads for the 6 speed M/T, but its really surprise to know they changed back to 5 speed M/T overnight.

Thanks

Raghu

No company does that actually be it an automobile company or any other. When they offer something 'extra' or something 'new' they have a lot of propaganada but when they remove it they are as silent as a dead man.

An accident is generally the result of a screw loose in the nut behind the steering wheel

6 speed transmission.

hmm I though no company would provide it for car below 15 lakhs. But Hyundai did. Whats power of Hyundai i20 diesel ?

6 speed transmission will work well with high power engine above 100 BHP. it will also give good mileage and faster acceleration. And as 6th gear has to be adjusted, gearing would be shorter.

Downside would be frequent gear changes required and you will have to wait for clean stretches to shift into top gear and cannot sustain it with lower RPM with low speed.

Am I right ? I dont know about machines much, I am from medical field. Tongue out

Driving is privilage, not a right.

Firstly, Yes, the 6-speed was discontinued(or moreover we can consider the 6-Speed version as a limited edition).

Coming to the utility of an additional ratio(read gear), it can be added to any engine practically. That too, a diesel given its torque, can be put to use very well. The 6th speed in the i20 could pull from 40kmph easily. Although we can get a taller 6th gear and make high speed cruising more efficient. Also, the prescence of 6 ratios will allow for closer positioning of gears, which IMPROVES driveability and requires lesser shifts on the go.

If the 6th gear were to be in a petrol, I would say that the top gear would be rarely used. But in a diesel, you can use it effectively and you wouldnt require shifts, at least on a highway.

Following the speculation of the new swift 2011, I think hyundai is reacting by manipulating the i20.

In May 2011, when I booked the era crdi which is about 40k less than the magna and is the cheapest diesel in hyundai (6.59 on road at that time), I was told the era was no more in production. Last month the sales guy called and told me era production is resumed so I have booked in July 25th. Today, I am told that the booking is on but now hyundai has made a change to the diesel. The 6 speed gear box has been changed to the usual 5 gears. This will be followed by a price reduction (this to be confirmed by the sales guy, about 10k).

The era diesel with 2 frt power windows and loads of other features not to mention the space and comfort levels when I booked was 6.73 lakhs on road (July 25th). Now I hope there will be a cost reduction for the gear box change. This will make the i20 era crdi quite vfm at around 6.6 lakhs on road. The ritz VDi is 6 lakhs on road in my place.

I think with the general loan rate increases and petrol prices, diesel cars are the bread earners for now.

I think these actions to keep the era model are aimed at keeping the diesel market competitive for hyundai since it has no other answer to the diesel varients in the maruti stable.

I confirmed this with the sales guy in my area. I have booked the i20 era crdi in July 25th and at that time this was not informed. Now when I spoke to the guy he confirmed. He said there may be about 10k cost reduction so he was waiting to confirm this then tell me. I somehow was looking forward to using the 6th gear. One of a kind in this segment. grrrr.

anyway, hoping the cost reduction will be effective. will update.

My Brother booked Hyundai i20 Asta CRDI. He is getting back Rs.15,000 as price reduction for the new model with 5 speed M/T.

I too have booked a i20 diesel, expecting delivery in the next two weeks.

When i paid the booking amount i was told that they now make only 5 speed ones and the 6 speed gearbox has been discontinued.

What would be the implication on fuel efficiency? The 5 speed gear box would mean fewer gear shifts, so does that translate to better fuel efficiency? And i get the feeling that city driving would be easier because of fewer gearshifts... Is my perception correct?

Also what's the point of a 6 speed for a sub 100 BHP car, the power band is that not wide anyways....

Guess i'm just trying to get myself to believe that the 5 speed is better coz that's the one heading my way!
