Efficiency is not dependent on gear shifts as such but on the way you shift the gears is what matters. Most of the times short shifts tend to use up more fuel if I am not wrong. The use of the 6th gear is for highway cruising. Most often than not in the city you hardly get to go above 4th and even if you do you need to shift back immediately. So you can consider the 5th and the 6th gear to be highway gears. In city they will not help much in increasing your fuel efficiency.

will there be any impact in the performance of the i20 after the 6 speed is changed to the 5 speed? The sales guy says no, but I am not sure.

if you drive in the highways at above 100 kms, there could be a difference in FE. I am not sure if any other changes are done to the engine for the gear change.

Why would the performance differ because of a reduced gear? The engine still remains the same and churns out the same power as well.

Highway cruising will now become less efficient and will kinda give more stress to the engine, due to the reason that the engine will be running at a higher speed in the fifth gear than in the sixth at a given speed. Due to the change in the gearbox, main performance difference can be found by an enthusiast driver and for a sedate driver, it wont mean much of a difference.

A few cost cuttings when compared with 2009 model CRDI Asta.

a. Spare wheel now is no more alloy wheel, it's the normal steel rim wheel.
b. Back center seat belt is lap belt (two point seat belt) not three point seat belt like the model I hav...e.
c. Cigarette lighter is missing, now it has only a plastic cover.
d. Of course the big one is 6th Gear

Can anyone explain about the 3rd point why Cigarette Lighter is missing, will it stop here or the cost cutting continues....????

Recent buyers please provide ur inputs got the above point weather Cigarette Lighter is there or not?

Following the speculation of the new swift 2011, I think hyundai is reacting by manipulating the i20.

In May 2011, when I booked the era crdi which is about 40k less than the magna and is the cheapest diesel in hyundai (6.59 on road at that time), I was told the era was no more in production. Last month the sales guy called and told me era production is resumed so I have booked in July 25th. Today, I am told that the booking is on but now hyundai has made a change to the diesel. The 6 speed gear box has been changed to the usual 5 gears. This will be followed by a price reduction (this to be confirmed by the sales guy, about 10k).

The era diesel with 2 frt power windows and loads of other features not to mention the space and comfort levels when I booked was 6.73 lakhs on road (July 25th). Now I hope there will be a cost reduction for the gear box change. This will make the i20 era crdi quite vfm at around 6.6 lakhs on road. The ritz VDi is 6 lakhs on road in my place.

I think with the general loan rate increases and petrol prices, diesel cars are the bread earners for now.

I think these actions to keep the era model are aimed at keeping the diesel market competitive for hyundai since it has no other answer to the diesel varients in the maruti stable.

I confirmed this with the sales guy in my area. I have booked the i20 era crdi in July 25th and at that time this was not informed. Now when I spoke to the guy he confirmed. He said there may be about 10k cost reduction so he was waiting to confirm this then tell me. I somehow was looking forward to using the 6th gear. One of a kind in this segment. grrrr.

anyway, hoping the cost reduction will be effective. will update.

DUDE I AM NEW HERE.....I WENT THRGH UR QUOTE N WAS SURPRISED TO C THT 120 CRDI ERA IS COSTING YOU 6.65LACS ...DUDE WLD LIKE TO TELL U THT I JUST GOT MY I20 SPORTZ CRDI (DELIVERED ON 16th NOV'11) IN 7.20 WID REGISTRATION...... ERA SUPPOSE TO BE MUCH MORE CHEAPER THN 6.65LACS ????

in Tamil nadu (chennai and hosur) the OTR cost of i20 magna is 7.1 lakhs and the era is about 40 - 45 K less. this is after the about 10k reduction in cost for the 5 speed.

which state are you from?

congrats on your new i20. How is your steering feel? Mine is slightly stiff above 20kms. Below 20 kms it is very light but not 'lifeless'.
