Dear All,

I have a Hyundai Accent Oct 2008 Executive Petrol Model in excellent condition. I drove it for just 21800 Kms till now. However I have to drive 100 Km daily for weekdays so I thought I will sell it and buy Swift VDI.

But even if I purchase Swift VDI the extra investment of 250000 I will be making I will not be able to match it even if I keep running my Accent on Petrol in next two and half years by which I price of Swift VDI will also be depreciated by 2 Lakh and Hyundai Accent too.. So in that ways there is not much sense in selling a car which has no problem in running it!

Would need expert advice whether I should go with CNG installation ( If yes then which Kit) or I should go ahead and buy Swift as depreciation will always be there with cars

Thanks in anticipation

Regards

KJ

let's do some calculation. Keeping mileage of both cars on higher side. Cost of running ACCENT and swift will be respectively 6 and 2.6 Rs. So cost difference comes 3.4 RS. Per km so monthly diff. Of RS. 10k+ so extra cost will be recover in 2 years. Secondly in that time span ACCENT will have more maintainance than swift.

. And if u instal cng kit for span of 2 years then accent might have woobling maintainance and resale value will depriciate quite heavily. My decision is for swift Vdi which u will never have to sell just after 2 years.

in my opinion one should never sell a petrol car to buy a diesel car. ur accent is still relatively new. with less than 3 years of age and only 22000 kms it still has got a lot of life in it.

consider plonking in a cng kit as it will be cheap to run ur car. thus eliminating the need for a diesel car. the money u save on running costs can be used to maintain the car better. even after generously spending money to maintain ur car u still would be left with money.

further u have a sedan and swift is a hatchback. also the price of a petrol car in the used car market is on the lower side.

run ur car for another 3 to 4 yrs before replacing. if u r still considering about swift u stand to lose out heavily due to hidden costs and the apparent costs.

if u want a calculation of costs and the economics let me know. i will try to put it in a numerical way

drive safe

I would second Harshvardhan. IMO, a car is a dead investment - it will only eat money over time, unless you use it as a money making tool like a taxi or tourist vehicle. So the best recourse is to use it as much as possible: Extract as many miles from it as possible whilst balancing fuel cost (i.e., drive so that car also gives maximum mileage). Selling off the car is an option but on the whole one still loses money. If the car is in good working condition then try to keep it in that condition and *use* the car (by that I don't mean use it for small errands, but for day-to-day commuting) - don't keep it idle for more than 40% of the week, for example. If you have used a car for 5-6 years continuously then the car can be said to have paid itself off in terms of miles (routine costs like maintenance and fuel are a given anyways).

Also look at it this way: Say you use the car to commute to work every day. So in a way it facilitates your work or profession. Now consider what the cost of commuting would be if you don't use the car, keeping in mind the convenience & comfort it affords you. How much would it cost to say, hire a taxi or rickshaw and commute to work everyday? Then see which is better cheaper vis-a-vis the level of comfort/convenience you want. IMO (and for me at least) the cost of car plus maintenance & fuel (petrol) costs it still turns out to be cheaper than than taking a rickshaw to and from work everyday. And you still don't get AC or a comfy cushion seat in a rickshaw! However this is all valid only if you already have a car (petrol/diesel doesn't or shouldn't matter) and pertains to using that car on long term. If you sell and buy a new car then its still a dent in your pocket. So unless there is a compelling reason (technical or otherwise) its better to stick to the current car.

Thanks all for your valuable reply...

Harshvardhan/Rohit... I also think you are right in saying so...
The car is indeed in an excellent condition even dealers are willing to buy in 330000 and end buyers till 345 and 350000.

I am waiting for someone to suggest me a good CNG kit, and tell me about maintainance cost as currently even after agreeing to whatever Samara says it costs me 6000 rs for 18000 kms in service.. which I think is reasonable if I am able to keep my car maintained...

I am now planning to take back the deposit for Swift
