Good decision to own a pup. Because it also brings love and care into one's life.

Both are lovable, affectionate and friendly beings, i would prefer the golden retriever for his beautiful colour of hair over labrador

Both are good dogs but shredding from the Golden Retriever can get to your head at times, not that the Lab does not shred but as the GR has longer hai the place tends to get messier. Since you are in Pune its fine else the GRs tend to feel very hot. Labs have a tendency to over eat and get plump. You may want to be more cautious if you get one to keep it in shape. My vote for the labs.

Between we too had a German Shep and after it died we decided not to get any pup as the feeling after they die is just too much to bear. Most of my family members did not have proper food for many days.

Good point Anshu. Failed to notice that actually on seeing one of my favourite animals.

Arvind - I forgot to mention one thing. The coat of the GR would require a little more care than that of the Lab. Since you have owned the German Shep, you would be aware of the smell and the problems related to an unclean coat. Just a suggestion. Have you considered adopting a cross breed or a dewormed and vaccinated stray? The reason why I say this is because there pure breeds are succesptible to lot of problems. I had done lot of research on this long back and so dont remember the problems with pure breeds but I can try and find some info on this if you wish. Cross breeds and strays tend to have longer life, adapt and are much more suited to local environmental conditions and do not have any major issues what so ever. A friend of mine used to have pure breeds for long but after sometime he started to have cross breeds. When I asked him the reason he mentioned what I have quoted above. Also by cross breeds I mean cross of pure breeds with local ones and not of pure breeds with pure breeds. Hope I am clear about the difference. I would seriously suggest you to think about this option. Not sure if you are aware there was a recent adoption drive in pune where these treated strays were up for adoption. just FYI

VFM on GR? Well its not that it is not possible but do make sure to check the purity of the breed if possible and the medical history of the parents too. That should give some insight
